Part of the invitation reads as follows:
This email is from Gmail Customer Care and we are sending it to every Gmail Email User Accounts Owner for safety. we are having congestions due to the anonymous registration of Gmail accounts so we are shutting down some Gmail accounts and your account was among those to be deleted. We are sending you this email so that you can verify and let us know if you still want to use this account.

My Doodle A Day Diet!
I just added a photo album called "Doodle a Day Diet" to share my progress on my daily doodling exercise. Click this link or you can find it on the sidebar on the right under Photos. It is amazing to me that as you add definition - with depth, outlines, fill, embellisments, color - even a poorly drawn shape or a weak composion will morph into something pretty darned good! I am quickly finding that the more I do, the more satisfying the results. I guess this is another variation on the old musician's joke:
How do you get to Carnegie Hall? Practice, practice, practice!
I challenge everyone who reads this to try my "Doodle a Day Diet" for yourself for two weeks. It's simple - no grocery shopping or cooking, just a writing implement and paper. You don't have to buy a snazzy new sketch book unless you really, really want to. You can even make it a "green project" by recycling the envelopes from your bills or your junk mail. I encourage you to try a nice black pen with a fairly bold line. I'm using a medium point PITT Artist Pen - india ink, which permanent so it doesn't bleed when you add color and doesn't soak through the page. Second choice would be something like a fine Sharpie, although they do soak through the page. Forget about pencil - commit to ink! It's just doodling. If you don't like it after you've done all you can with it, move on to the next page.

Reassociating Word files with Open Office on the Mac
One more thing I ran into after posting the blog on my Microsoft Office update problem originally. Turns out that the update reassociated all of the "Office" files with the Microsoft programs (even though they don't exist on my machine), so double-clicking a document for instance tries to open it with Microsoft Word (which of course fails).

Meditation II - In the Forest is done!
I finally finished, at the last minute as usual. I am very pleased with it. I am happy, too, that I found such rich and personally meaningful subject matter from which to develop this series. I am pleased with the process too. I worked in my sketchbook first, then with my decorated papers, then with transparencies to work out the quilting desings, and finally on the design wall, and back through this loop again as needed. Of course there were some stumbling blocks along the way, but I learned from every one. The most important lesson is to plan better for deadlines. There is no point in purposefully adding stressors to my life, or to turning my beloved creative life into something stressful.
The painted fusible in the center square was interesting, and the results were not at all what I had imaginged. I love the effect and will definitely use it again. Overlapping the leaves was a little tricky, but in my view, well worth the effort.

DOODLING EVERY DAY!
I was at Michaels yesterday and found this little book - “The Doodle Formula: A Step-by-step Guide to Creating the Perfect Doodle” by Adrienne Looman. You might want to take a look at the author's blog, too.
At first glance I scoffed – who needs instruction or even a formula for doodling? Since I had a few minutes to kill, I decided to look inside anyway. What a delightful surprise. The book is brilliantly simple, and quite engaging, although very slim. It is a jumping off point rather than a complete course. The author presents a very simple formula for developing your doodling skills, which I believe are innate. Everyone can do this.
This book is really a clever, sneaky ploy to teach, encourage, and build confidence in the dreaded drawing and sketching. You cannot look at this book and use the worn out excuses, “but I can’t draw” or "I'm no good at drawing", as you might with some formal tome or drawing class. I came home and tried her formula. She’s quite right – it’s easy, it’s addictive, and it’s fun! I highly recommend this book. I feel rather silly being so excited about this book, but there is something about doodling that generates great enthusiasm. You really can’t help smiling when you do it.
When looking for book reviews on the Internet, I found several other books on doodling (who knew?) including one that offered a free lesson from the book. “Doodling for Papercrafters” by Maelynn Cheung, the lesson is http://www.leisurearts.com/downloadfiles/9_07_basicswirls.pdf . Try it. I think you’ll like it.
Because this is so much fun, and good for me in lots of ways, I have resolved to doodle every day! It's sort of a doodle a day diet. I even started a new small sketchbook just for doodling. I beleive this exercise will really change my artwork in wonderful ways. For example, already in just the four pages I did above, I see patterns that will enhance my free motion quilting greatly.

Decreasing Your Bounce Rate

Hi folks! Another tip has been pulled to the forefront of my memory by an inquiring blogger...the necessity of using target="_blank".
LOL...don't look at me like that...I'm not talking dirty :-) Using target="_blank" in an outgoing link on your blog or website causes a new browser window to open when the link is clicked. It is desireable for two reasons.
First, the visitor is still on your website when they close that window after perusing, and they don't have to navigate back to your page.
And second, it helps to decrease your "bounce" rate.
LOL...I knew I'd get your eyes to roll up in your head at least once in this post :-)
Bounce Rate is defined as how many times a visitor "bounces" away from your site and comes back. If you are involved in increasing your SEO (Search Engine Optimization), the bounce rate on an entry page can help to determine how effective it is at grabbing people's attention.
Now before you running screaming from the room yelling, "SEO, SEO!" I must add caviar...LOL...I mean...a caveat. Bounce rate is only an SEO factor is you have a site for commerce. If your site is about ordinary stuff like blogging, news or just plain information you really don't have to worry.
The neat and conclusive reason for adding target="_blank" is to keep people on your page!

Meet SAQA's Artists: SAQA's 20th Anniversary Trunk Show
Here's the little piece I made for SAQA's Trunk Show. This exhibit is a great idea, and I am so pleased for the opportunity to contribute this little piece of me. It was nice to do something small, and kind of cool NOT to have to finish the edges because the pieces will be matted with and 8x8 opening. My only frustration - when I was done quilting, it was done. It told me it was done. I hung it on my design wall and thought about it for several days, but it was still done! I wanted to embellish it, but it doesn't need it and there simply isn't room for it. This is very amusing to me, since I usually can find a reason to embellish ANYTHING. At one time there was a family joke: don't sit down at Robin's house - she'll glue something to you!
Here's the statement I sent with it:
This small quilt represents both me and my style in many ways.We (the quilt and I) are colorful, vibrant, intense, a bit complicated (over 30 pieces of fabric in an 8” square!), all over the place (the quilting), and sparkly. I’m not sure which I like better, bright colors or sparkly things, so I use both generously in all of my creative work, including my quilts, sketchbooks, decorative painting, etc. Typically, I would bind a quilt like this one in black and white fabrics. That’s a little joke about me, because sometimes, I tend to be bound up in black and white! I adore brilliant color; it doesn’t matter what color so long as it is bright, intense, vivid, and bold. Things that sparkle first caught my eye very early in my life, and haven’t let go yet. I rarely make anything that does not include sparkle in some way, whether in metallic paints shiny or metallic threads, shimmering fabrics, beads, or crystals. I piece my way to the intricacy I so love by stacking fabrics, slashing and reassembling them, and repeating the process many times.

We have a new President !
I took the day off and spent it at my father-in-law's house, watching all the excitement in Washington D.C.
I was still thinking about how emotional I felt watching Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream" speech on the drive over the bridge. My wife hadn't been there when King's speech aired, so I pulled it up (iPhone is amazing) and read it to her as she was driving. Reading the text aloud, once more underlined for me the power of the words. There were times that I had to pause in order to get the words out because I was so choked up.

E Pluribus Unum II
Ann Flaherty just published a small selection of the wonderful responses to her E Pluribus Unum II Challenge, including my quilt Warhol Family Matzoh Ball Soup, on her Cultural Cloth website. All of the challenge quilts will ultimately be published on the QuiltArt website. I will update this link when the entire exhibit is available for online viewing. Ann is also busy making arrangements for this special exhibit to travel. Your comments on her site will be a great help in arranging venues to show this work.
Ann challenged the members of the QuiltArt, the Internet's largest mailing list for contemporary art quilters, to create art quilts reflecting their cultural heritage. Each quilt was to be 14" square and include a photo transfer.
I really enjoyed participating in this challenge. The subject matter got me thinking and sketching about my cultural heritage in ways I had not previously considered. I was so excited when i finally got the idea for my quilt. This is the first quilt I have made using my own photography. In the process, I learned a lot more about photography and some cool tricks in Photoshop, too. My new favorite is the hue/saturation adjustment.
I am really looking forward to seeing all of the quilts in this exhibit. The quilts, along with their respective artists' statements, offer a touching and unique glimpse into the lives and hearts of the quiltmakers. Adding a New Header Image

Man, oh man! I'm just full of posts lately! *snort-giggle* I've been helping a lot of friends get their blogs redesigned.
Well here is a problem I've noticed on several of my friends blogs. When they re-install their templates, they can no longer get their header images to show. Well I've come up with a work-around....LOL...and yes...you have to go play with your HTML!
I'll turn ya'll into template gurus yet!
This problem is especially prevalent on the Scribe template. When you swtich templates the Header gadget should stay, but in the Scribe it doesn't...so go figure!
Here's how we're gonna fix it. We're going to delete the present Header element from the template and add a new one. LOL...I think the old one has a bad case of the ick! But first we have to allow the Header section to allow another gadget (You will notice that there is no "Add a Gadget" section on the Scribe Header.
Here's where we go play with HTML. Start at your Dashboard....go to the Layout tab...then click the Edit HTML link. We are going to scroll down to the highlighted section of code in the below image. If you can't read what it says, click on the image and it will open in a larger window.
What you are going to do is change the line where it says...showaddelement "no"...to "yes" This will allow the "add a Gadget to show up in the header section of your template. And you are going to remove the <b section that has your bad Header, so that that section looks like this when you are done.
Now you will click "Save Template". It will tell you that you are deleting a Widget, like in the below image. That's okay...click yes!
Now go to your Page Elements page...see the "Add a Gadget" in the Header section. Click it! Scroll all the way to the bottom of the list and pick Page Header.
When it opens, click for the image to show "instead of the title and description" Then either find your image on the internet at your storage site, or use the top link and upload it from your computer. Then click save! Viola! You have your header back!
