Apple Says Steve Jobs is Back at Work

Apple has told news agencies that Steve Jobs is now back at work.

"Steve Jobs is back to work. He is at Apple a few days a week and working from home the other days," Apple spokesman Steve Dowling said. "We're glad to have him back."

It was recently confirmed that Steve Jobs underwent a liver transplant at the Methodist University Hospital Transplant Institute. They say Mr. Jobs is now recovering well and has an excellent prognosis.

“It should give investors confidence in Apple’s three-to- five year road map,” said Gene Munster, an analyst with Piper Jaffray & Co. “Having Steve Jobs back means they got the visionary back.”

We can jailbreak the 3GS right now. But making our jailbreak public at this point in time would benefit relatively few people. It would in fact be detrimental to many more people than it would help. So we feel it’s best to keep our version of the jailbreak out of Apple’s sights for the time being.

Details:

If you already have a 3GS phone and have already done a full USB dump or captured your img3’s signed with your ECID, then you’re in great shape. You will always be able to jailbreak. But many people who plan on getting a 3GS do not yet have one. For instance, many people are waiting for their existing contracts to mature to the point where they get a price break on the 3GS. Many people are trying to sell their 3G before they can buy the 3GS. There are parts of the globe where you can’t even buy a 3GS yet! The reasons are varied, but they are many.

The nature of the 3GS hardware allows Apple to stop IPSWs from being usable unless you’ve already gotten the signed chunks they send to you based on your ECID (a unique chip ID). You cannot get these signed chunks without knowing your ECID, and you don’t know your ECID until you’ve bought your 3GS.

The jailbreak requires at least one signed iBoot-family img3 for your device. And that iBoot needs to have an exploitable bug. It’s an all-or-nothing deal…you either have your signed exploitable iBoot ready to use, for now and forever — always jailbreakable — or you have nothing.

Here’s the critical point, the reason why we’re delaying our version of the jailbreak: Once the jailbreak is out, Apple will fix the iBoot-family bug we use to accomplish it. They will simply stop signing the old iBoots and only sign the fixed ones. If you bought your phone after Apple has done this, there’s nothing you can do…the jailbreak isn’t going to work for you.

It is possible that Apple will find the bug we use without our handing it to them on a silver platter (via a public jailbreak). In that case, we will have delayed our jailbreak for “nothing”. But we’d rather be safe than sorry!

Apple is surely coming out with a 3.0.1 firmware release shortly. They need to fix ultrasn0w. They need to fix some UI issues. 3.0 is buggy and 3.0.1 is coming. We’re going to wait and see what 3.0.1 brings before figuring out the release date for our version of the jailbreak.

In the meantime, we have some remaining 3.0 jailbreak issues to investigate, including push notification. Thanks for being patient with us while we took a 3GS “timeout”!

Beware: Identity Thieves Harvest Social Networks

A third of social networkers have at least three pieces of information visible on their profiles that could make them vulnerable to ID theft, says the security firm Webroot.

Research by the U.K. security software firm revealed that 78 percent of Brits are concerned about the privacy of information on their social networks such as Facebook and MySpace.

However, despite these concerns 59 percent of social networkers are unsure of who can see their profile while 78 percent have profiles that are visible in a Google search.

A further 36 percent admitted that they didn't hide any of their personal information from people viewing their profile and 28 percent said they accepted 'friend requests' from strangers.

A third of social networkers also said they used the same passwords for all of their online accounts.

"The growth of social networks presents hackers with a huge target. The amount of time spent on communities like Facebook last year grew at three times the rate of overall Internet growth," said Mike Kronenberg, chief technology officer of Webroot's consumer business.

"Hackers lure users into taking actions they shouldn't by making it appear as if a friend within their social network has sent them a message - only the message is from a hacker who's hijacked the friend's account."

Kronberg said the first step to staying protected was for social networkers to make themselves aware of threats are and know how to help prevent them.

With the recession, some states are trying to pull in more revenue, and they are now going online to get it. One company Amazon, is handling the proposed sales tax levy by North Carolina by closing their affiliate program from the state.

Per Fox Business, Amazon has closed their affiliate program to residents of North Carolina due to the proposed change in sales tax for affiliate sales. Amazon told their marketing affiliates in the state "that the move was a direct result of North Carolina's push to levy a tax on purchases made through Amazon affiliates."

Are there any other states where affiliates may be closed out by Amazon. Consideration is also on the board for California and Hawaii (Rumor or Fact: Hawaii is said to be closed by Amazon).

Many people around the world yesterday were saddened over the news of the sudden death of pop star Michael Jackson.

But the King of Pop's passing also impacted the tech world as millions of fans flocked to Twitter, Facebook, and various news sites to soak up Jackson-related information.

The result was an impact on the Internet we haven't seen since the Great Google Lapse of 2009.

TMZ: Scoop or Fail?

TMZ was the first news service out of the gate with news about Michael Jackson's death just after 3 p.m. Pacific Time. Initally, TMZ quoted unnamed sources about the singer's death, but did it really have the scoop?

Maybe not, says technology writer Mike Elgan on his personal blog The Raw Feed. Although Elgan can't say for sure whether TMZ had solid information, the writer notes that someone had created a phony news story using an online tool that creates fake news items. The bogus story was from a nonexistent news service called Global Associated News. Before long, tweeters were linking back to GAN's phony report, with links growing at a rate of 10 per second for half an hour, Elgan says. The funny thing is, the tweets and the fake story all happened before TMZ broke the news using anonymous sources.

So did TMZ base its initial report on the phony news story or did it base its report on legitimate sources of information? I'm guessing TMZ's story was the real thing, but Elgan's theory is an interesting take on what can happen when news sources and social media collide.

Twitter Rumors

While some tweets were linking back to the fake Michael Jackson news story, other Twitter users were having their own fun with the Twitter-based rumor mill. Lost among the Michael Jackson tweets were claims that other celebrities had also died. including Jeff Goldblum and Harrison Ford. Those stories turned out to be bogus, but many people were taken in by the hoax, at least initially.

Twitter and AIM Fail

Twitter's infamous fail whale hasn't been seen very often in recent months, but yesterday it was on full display during the Jackson fallout. Twitter co-founder Biz stone told The Los Angeles Times the microblogging site "saw an instant doubling of tweets per second the moment the story broke." Twitter hadn't seen that kind of activity since last year's U.S. presidential election. The result was a slowing of the entire service, and the fail whale made frequent, albeit brief, appearances throughout the Jackson news wave. Twitter's search capabilities were also briefly affected.

It's interesting to note that the voracious appetite for Twitter updates about recent problems in Iran has not seriously impacted Twitter. After days of tweets about election rigging and street violence there was no noticeable impact on Twitter's service, but Jackson dies and the Twitosphere comes crashing down under the weight of the singer's popularity.

AOL Instant Messenger also had problems, largely due to bad timing on AIM's part. The instant messaging service was scheduled for maintenance right around the time the Jackson news broke. Responding to PC World's inquiries about AIM's blackout, AOL put out the following statement: "At AOL our AIM instant messaging service was undergoing a previously scheduled software update which should normally prove routine. It proved not to be. There was a significant increase in traffic due to today's news and AIM was down for approximately 40 minutes this afternoon." Obviously, the news AOL referred to is Jackson's death. The company said it has "never seen anything like it in terms of scope or depth. Historically, celebrity news prompts a worldwide outpouring with several key consumer behaviors -- searching, sharing and reacting to the news followed by online tributes has become the modern way to mourn."

WWW Fail

We've been hearing doomsday predictions about the end of the Internet for some time. The basic premise is that in the next few years, the Internet's infrastructure needs a drastic overhaul before it bursts apart at the seams.

While some would like to believe otherwise, the news of Jackson's death didn't kill the Internet. However, some segments of the World Wide Web definitely experienced overloads that caused some sites to go dark or at least slow down. The load times for major news sites slowed down from four seconds to nine seconds, according to Venture Beat. Impacted sites included ABC, AOL, LA Times, CNN Money, and CBS.

The Los Angeles Times, one of the first trusted news source to verify Jackson's death, reported nearly 2.3 million page views in just one hour -- the highest traffic the newspaper has experienced in such a short time. That page view record beats any hour during the Times' highest traffic day of all time -- November 5, 2008, the day after Barack Obama was elected President.

Akamai, a tech firm that tracks Internet usage, reported that North America's most popular news sites experienced a traffic influx 20 percent above average during the height of the Jackson story.

Final Impact

While some portions of the Internet were creaking under the pressure, Wikipedia users engaged in a brief editing war over Michael Jackson's entry. Unsurprisingly, Wikipedia editors eventually locked out changes to Jackson's page until hard news sites verified Jackson's death. By this morning, Michael Jackson had taken the top four spots on the iTunes 100 top albums sold.

It's interesting to note that despite the constant tweets and TMZ's early pronouncement, a lot of people were reluctant to believe Jackson was gone until a more credible news source -- so-called old media -- verified the entertainer's death. So Jackson's death didn't bring down the Internet, and it reminds us that new media like Twitter, Facebook, and The Huffington Post can only enhance our news experience, but these online resources are no substitute for traditional, hard-nosed reporting.

Jailbreak for the iPhone 3GS Confirmed

GeoHot, chronic, posixninja, and pod2g have been able to verify that the 24kpwn exploit will work to jailbreak the iPhone 3GS.

This is great news for all of you. Basically, this means if someone makes a tethered jailbreak, it easily becomes untethered, because the boot chain is broken. Expect big things soon

The iPhone Dev-Team has also verified this!

About 5 hours ago, we were able to verify that the 24Kpwn exploit that the hybrid team used on the iPod Touch 2G is still present in the bootrom of the iPhone 3GS. That means we can apply the same sort of technique used by our current redsn0w tool to jailbreak and unlock the iPhone 3GS.

This is great news! It seems this bootrom was cut in about the August 2008 timeframe, so the unfortunate early reveal of 24Kpwn earlier this year didn’t affect the iPhone 3GS.

We should see the jailbreak tools updated for the iPhone 3GS very soon!

This is great news for all of you. Basically, this means if someone makes a tethered jailbreak, it easily becomes untethered, because the boot chain is broken. Expect big things soon

On a personal note, I'm sad. Apple, it took me a week to break through your new defenses. And to let us reuse an exploit like that; 24kpwn was so 5 months ago. Although I imagine it must have been painful watching the devices roll by on the assembly line, knowing they all had a hole in them and you couldn't fix it.

usbdump huh? how?

Apple has added a new layer of security to the iPhone 3GS. I mentioned it several posts earlier; it's the ECID field. When iTunes starts the restore process, they contact Apple servers to generate signatures just for your device. It's important you get these signatures for your phone before a new version of the software comes out. I had previously suggested doing this by dumping usb while the iPhone restores. But this is complicated.

Fortunately, the good folks at purplera1n are here for you, the end user who wants a jailbreak. Follow these instructions to generate a unique certificate for your phones iBSS. And don't delay, Apple may change their minds. To clarify, this is instead of a usb dump. Do this, and you are good!

1. Put your phone into recovery mode and connect it to your computer.
2. Using usbview on Windows(enable Config Descriptors), System Profiler on Mac, or lsusb on Linux, read your phones ECID. It's the 16 digit hex number after "ECID:"
3. Go to purplera1n, type it, and hit enter
4. Save the generated file for a purplera1nyday...

Hospital Confirms Steve Jobs Liver Transplant

James D. Eason, M.D., program director at Methodist University Hospital Transplant Institute and chief of transplantation confirmed today, with the patient's permission, that Steve Jobs received a liver transplant at Methodist University Hospital Transplant Institute in partnership with the University of Tennessee in Memphis.

Mr. Jobs underwent a complete transplant evaluation and was listed for transplantation for an approved indication in accordance with the Transplant Institute policies and United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) policies.

He received a liver transplant because he was the patient with the highest MELD score (Model for End-Stage Liver Disease) of his blood type and, therefore, the sickest patient on the waiting list at the time a donor organ became available. Mr. Jobs is now recovering well and has an excellent prognosis.

The Methodist University Hospital Transplant Institute performed 120 liver transplants in 2008 making it one of the ten largest liver transplant centers in the United States. We provide transplants to patients regardless of race, sex, age, financial status, or place of residence. I have been going through it on a personal level lately. Can't seem to get the girl thing right. I'm sure a lot of these emotions will come out in the new songs. Recently, I was listening to the old Self Scientific and probably our best piece of work The Self Science, which was released in 2001 and recorded between 97-2000. In fact, this song was the second to last song recorded for the disc. At the time I had just found out my girlfriend at the time had fucked a good friend of mine. Now, nothing like that is going on... but the point of this song rings true, and applies to my life in so many ways.

How to Unlock the iPhone 3G Using UltraSn0w

These are instructions on how to unlock the iPhone 3G for use with any GSM cellphone carrier using UltraSn0w.

Before you can follow these instructions you must have a jailbroken iPhone and you must be on the 04.26.08 baseband(modem firmware). This means that you must be running the 3.0 firmware and have used PwnageTool or RedSn0w to jailbreak.

To find your firmware and modem firmware(baseband) versions you can follow this tutorial. If you are not on baseband version 04.26.08 then you need to follow one of these tutorials before unlocking: Mac, Windows

Steve Jobs Is Back At Work

Steve Jobs did report to work today say Apple employees who have seen him on campus.

According to CNBC, Officials at Apple have yet to respond to multiple phone calls and emails seeking guidance about Jobs and his whereabouts, but employees are doing what Apple PR isn't, and that's confirming that he's here at work.

This comes after a recent report by the Wall Street Journal stating that, Steve Jobs, who has been on medical leave from Apple Inc. since January to treat an undisclosed medical condition, received a liver transplant in Tennessee about two months ago. The chief executive has been recovering well and is expected to return to work on schedule later this month, though he may work part-time initially.

I am running Mac OS X 10.5.7 and at home i am with Optus wireless broadband (UBS plugin thing, as you can tell i know nothing about computers) and have no problem.

iPhone 3G S: What's Missing

You might think that there couldn’t be much to add to a phone that even has an electronic compass. But we’ve put together a list of five things that Apple left out.

Now in its third generation, the iPhone handset has made improvements with each successive model. This year, though, the improvements are less about what you see and more about what's packed under the chassis--and what's available in the iPhone OS 3.0 software update (accessible to current iPhone owners and on new iPhone 3G S units).

That's not to say that the iPhone 3G S isn't good. In fact, this new model is among the best handsets on the market today. Still, the 3G S's combination of hardware and software continues to miss the mark in a few critical areas, and these deficiencies prevent the iPhone from leaping far ahead the competition.

1. Mass Storage Connectivity

Why can't I connect an iPhone to my PC and then drag and drop files onto it? Apple says that it has considered introducing a disk mode, of the type found on all iPods, but feels that the iPhone's audience doesn't require one. I disagree. Early adopters and the enterprise workers that Apple is targeting (now that iPhone 3G S has hardware encryption and other enterprise-friendly features) would greatly appreciate direct-to-device file transfers. Plus, the capability would simplify transferring photos and other relevant data files (such as Excel spreadsheets and PDF files) to the device. The latter feature is especially important as the iPhone grows ever closer to converging with netbooks (a couple of office productivity apps are already available for the iPhone). Right now, to read a Word or Excel file or a PDF, you'll need to e-mail it to yourself, and read it from within your e-mail. (Some files are supported over Google Docs, as well.)

I recognize that Apple hopes we'll all subscribe to its $99-a-year MobileMe service, and give its cloud iDisk storage a try. But that isn't going to happen across the iPhone's mainstream market, nor is it going to happen with the tech-savvy audience. The sooner Apple realizes this, the better.

With the iPhone 3G S available in capacities up to 32GB, it makes more sense than ever for Apple to allow users to transfer raw data to the device. In some cases, users may want to access the data from the device; in others, they may want to use the storage to move files from PC to PC (why carry a tiny, easily misplaced USB flash drive for your important work files, when you can store files on your phone, which is less likely to disappear--or go through the washer).

2. Broader Data Handling

Why is there no way to save text messages on an iPhone? (At least with the 3G S you can copy and paste a message into a note or e-mail message; but that's not the same as being able to archive an entire thread or to e-mail all or part of a thread to yourself.) And what's with the antiquated Notes app, which limits you to exporting a Note by e-mailing it to yourself? That restriction is ridiculous at this stage of the iPhone's development. A simple yet substantial improvement would be to make such notes appear as text files that users could open in Windows Explorer. Better still: Give iPhone users direct access to the files, and back up the files within iTunes (currently, you can sync Notes into Outlook and nothing else).

3. iTunes Reconstructed for Data Management

Apple's iTunes began life eight years ago as a music jukebox that interfaced with the first iPods and later with the iTunes Music Store. Fast-forward to 2009, when iTunes has gone far beyond its original purpose.

At this point, working with iTunes' tabbed data management interface is akin to using Windows 3.1's File Manager in a Mac OS X Snow Leopard environment. ITunes' cluttered interface contradicts Apple's minimalist design aesthetics, and the menus for syncing Info, Ringtones, Music, Photos, Podcasts, Video, and Applications are a text-and-check-box travesty.

ITunes is long overdue for an overhaul, given the multifaceted functionality of the iPhone (and of the iPod Touch, for that matter). Why can't I drag-and-drop into iTunes? Why can't I import specific photos into iTunes? Or view applications by their icons, instead of having to resort to a text name that I might not even recall? How about making it easier for me to import self-generated video--from within the tabbed syncing interface?

If Apple were to shake up and reshape iTunes with an eye toward simplicity, it could also make the service far more powerful and compelling. And that, in turn, would make the iPhone platform even more attractive than it is today.

4. Improved Integration With the Web

The iPhone's hooks into calendars feel fairly archaic. Calendar syncing is limited to Outlook and CalDAV; but if Palm's WebOS and its Pre smartphone can extend this process seamlessly across multiple calendars, why can't Apple and the iPhone do so in Gen 3? Granted, with an iPhone you can sync contacts with Outlook, Yahoo Address Book, Google Contacts, and Windows; but why can't you access those contact lists directly from the iPhone's Contacts app to begin with? Stronger ties with existing, established Web services would help make the iPhone a more Web-centric communications handset.

5. A Better Camera--Really

Yes, Apple has bumped the camera in the iPhone 3G S up to 3 megapixels and added tap response to focus/expose and macro functionality. But the camera needs more work to improve its standing in today's vigorous camera phone competition.

Let's start with the megapixel count. The iPhone 3G S's 3 megapixels feels almost entry-level in comparison to the offerings of today's high-flying phones. Such models as the Nokia N97 have already reached 5 megapixels, and higher megapixels are appearing with greater frequency on pricey camera phones. Bump up the megapixels and the image quality, Apple, and you bump up the device's functionality--and its ability to fill in for a point-and-shoot camera for casual snapshots.

Also high on my list: Allow one of the existing buttons (the volume control or the home button) to act as the shutter. I find I can't steady the camera adequately when I have to push on the screen to snap the shutter. A physical button would solve that problem--and make the phone's camera much easier to use one-handed. For example when you're snapping a picture of yourself and a friend at a party, with the phone's screen facing away from you, pushing a physical button is a lot easier than finding and pressing a virtual button on the display.

Software image stabilization would be another great feature, as would better light-sensitivity capabilities and an LED flash (another increasingly common feature on camera phones). Include the ability to shoot multiple frames rapid-fire, and suddenly the iPhone 3G S's camera could be a very powerful tool.
