Affiliate Marketing-From the Other Side

Affiliate Marketing-From the Other Side
By Vickie J Scanlon

Affiliate Marketing from the other side? What do I mean? Those who offer affiliate programs to affiliates have both benefits and concerns.

When you have an affiliate program you have to honestly look who will be promoting your product. What should you look at when someone wants to join your program? Most all companies look for the following area of compliance and niche matching when considering affiliates:

  • Does the affiliate have content that would appeal to your market
  • Will they abide by your search marketing and copyright policies
  • Is their site aesthetically pleasing *Do they agree to not display pornographic or offensive content

These rules are important to the one with the affiliate program. It can protect your online reputation. That comes to my next subject -A strict no-spam, fraud policy.

No Spam Policy

If you are thinking about creating your own product and thus, are looking for affiliates, you should enforce a strict no-spam, fraud policy. Why? If your site becomes associated with spam or fraud – it will damage or destroy your reputation. This translates into no online business.

Positives of an affiliate program

The positives of having your own product is:

1. It will grow web sales.
2. Increased traffic
3. Solidifies you as an expert

To conclude, there is a lot to consider when creating and maintaining an affiliate program. But what is just as important, is not forgetting about the affiliate and what they can bring to your business.

9 Tips to Blogging Etiquette for the Newbie

9 Tips to Blogging Etiquette for the Newbie
By Vickie J. Scanlon

You’ve got a blog, but are you conducting yourself properly with your fellow bloggers? If this thought has crossed your mind as you were typing a comment, or creating a post-you’re on the right track. Below are some blogging etiquette rules that if followed, can help you in your blogging journey and keep you from damaging your reputation online.

1. Self-promotion with no comment relevant to the post in question disrupts the flow of the post and will be deleted. How best to promote your blog is through a well thought out comment that is relevant to the post. Leave a link within your name or signature.

a. Do not say "Visit My Blog" or “Please link to me”. If someone left a message of this nature on your own site, more than likely you would be offended and would delete it. Other bloggers are no different. People have to have reasons to link to another site.

b. Do not stick an advertisement in your comment. How annoying. It's gone in my book.

2. Hateful commenting-Though you may think it is necessary, the blog owner will probably delete it if the comment is not relevant to the post, or if he or she feels it is offensive to their readers. Yes, you can disagree, but do it in a constructive and respectful manner. Remember, people like controversy-they are turned off by rudeness.

3. If you mention a post or a quote from another blog, be sure to put a link back to their site so others can enjoy what you have read.

4. Images- Always identify where you got the image if you put images on your blog.

5. Do not link to an image from another site. You are stealing bandwidth from that person.

6. If you’re going to be using someone else’s content get their permission. If permission is granted be sure to include the author’s name with a link back to their site.

7. If it is from a free article directory, be sure to include the resource box with hyperlinks hot. If you ignore these rules, you are in fact stealing their content (which is a no-no) and it is called “copyright infringement”.

8. Remember that the words you write are a permanent record. Get in the mindset that the whole world may be seeing what you are writing- that could be your boss, your future employer or a friend. Rule of thumb: Think before you hit those keys on the keyboard.

9. Reputation - To build trust make sure that the information you give your readers is as accurate as possible. Do your research. If the information you are giving is opinion-state it as such.

To conclude, with more and more people coming onboard the blogging train, it’s nice to know that yes, etiquette in the blogging world does matter.

More On Affiliate Programs

More On Affiliate Programs

By Vickie J Scanlon

How do you choose an affiliate program? Simple question, but is the answer that simple? Yes and no. Let me explain.

First things first - If you are just starting out with a new website or blog, do not be surprised that sometimes the affiliate program you are asking to join will say – no. This, I must remind you, is only a temporary setback. And yes, it won’t be the last time you will see this happen. Even after you are established, you may find the “I regret” message occasionally hit your email. You have to say, “That’s okay”, and move on.

Learning By Doing

There are a lot of lessons to be learned, and yes, trial and error on your part is necessary-to find out what works and what does not work. So to begin, let me say....

The most important lesson that I learned is to select a product or service that compliments your niche or theme. Trust me, if it doesn’t fit your niche or blend well with your other products you won’t see the sales you expect. In fact, it may confuse your visitors-and cause a quick click away.

Second, to begin your affiliate search, look to affiliate brokerage firms such as: Commission Junction, Linkshare, OneNetworkDirect (software), or Clickbank (software). These affiliate brokerage firms give you many choices to choose from to get your affiliate business jumpstarted. Granted, the companies that you choose to go with, may still stay no-but the choices are many.

Third, do not restrict yourself to one product or service. Yes, many will disagree with me, by saying – “no, no just select one or two products and advertise like crazy.” When I first began, I thought –okay that sounds good. But…I ask you this: What happens if the product or service you relied on decides to fold their affiliate program? It happens. In other words, do not put all your eggs into one basket. I would attempt to build my affiliate programs up to a minimum of five products or service. Why? If one program slides, you still have other programs to rely on for income.

Fourth, do your research. Always research the programs you want to join. Here are several questions to ask yourself: 1) is their customer service good; 2) how new of a company are they. In other words, think like a consumer, as well as, guard your online creditability and integrity to the highest.

To conclude, as your affiliate business or website grows you may be surprised to find that some affiliate managers will be requesting that you join their program. Take the flattery that they offer, but never blindly accept until you have checked them out.

To Link or Not To Link

To Link or Not To Link
By Vickie J. Scanlon

To link or not to link, is definitely the question. Why? A lot has changed, and is changing when it comes to linking. Google especially, is cracking down on certain types of linking. So what do you need to consider.

Backlinks
Let’s start with backlinks. Backlinks are links that are directed toward your website (also called Inbound links). The number of backlinks are an indication of the popularity or importance of your website, which in turn, indicates the importance of the page (page rank).

Minute Review of Calculating Relevancy of Site
How does search engines calculate the relevance of a site? They consider the quality of the inbound links-which is determined by the quality of the other site's content.

What is important? The inbound link will rank higher in relevance if the other site’s content is relevant to your site. If you have inbound links that is not related to your site, the degree of importance goes down.

Google Raise the Bar on Quality Links
Google is being more particular, setting higher standards for linking. Why? Some people are of the mistaken belief that they can increase their ranking by using link farms. I would strongly suggest that you think twice before venturing into that area. Why? Link farms can hurt your ranking, and/or set you up to being banned by Google. It was a going thing in the past – but Google has matured, as well as, their technology and skill level, and they are expecting more from their users.

So, on a personal level, what really is the important reason to achieving quality backlinks? Simple. To encourage visitors to your site.

Reciprocal Links
This brings us to reciprocal links. Reciprocal links, as you know, are links that are exchanged by webmasters. There purpose is to increase their page ranking. But what if you have backlinks that show "no relevancy" to your website are included in the mix? They get counted-but with a decreased relevancy on the specific outbound link.

So what do you do:
1. Know who you are linking too.
2. Make sure the site compliments and is relevant to your site.
3. They don't practice black-hat SEO techniques.
4. Be careful about interlinking your websites, especially if they are on the same IP.
5. They are not in a bad neighborhood

Other Issues
There are other issues to consider here as well. It's a nice compliment to have your site singled out by another site for linking purposes. But please look at the site, the total site. And if you do link with the other site, click on the link ever so often. Why?

1. You could find they eliminated the page completely.
2. They started using a 302 redirect, linking to a product they are selling. Gee, could it be you're selling something for someone else-and not getting the money. Or, are they stealing your traffic? Both!
3. They put your link on a “No Follow” “no Index” page. (That’s like a fish swimming upstream in mud).
4. They encrypted the whole page where your link is to reside. (Is it there, or isn’t it?).
5. Your link is moved from one page to the next. (With each move, the relevancy of the link goes down, in the eyes of the search engines.)

To conclude, linking is a process that needs constant attention on your part. If you ignore the link and expect your linking partners to behave themselves-when you don’t know them-expect to have some problems. Translated-be vigilant, and take appropriate action when necessary.

Affiliate Marketing-Things To Know

Affiliate Marketing-Things To Know
By Vickie J. Scanlon

I stumbled into affiliate marketing by way of a scam. I was trying to do the old proverbial, newbie-typing job way of getting on the Internet. Yeah, I got scammed. I was about ready to give up my dream of working online when someone suggested affiliate marketing. That was my beginning-it opened up a whole new world to explore, but along with it a learning curve.
So how do you choose an affiliate program, and how do you safeguard your affiliate business?

Choosing An Affiliate Program

Choosing an affiliate program should be an easy task. Right? No not really, not if you want to keep your creditability intact. So what should you check for in an affiliate program.

1. Check for the percentage payout. Most programs do not offer high payouts, unless it is a software program or ebook. If the percentage payout and the price of the product you are selling are both low-you might want to look for something different. Unless, of course, it’s a good product and it fits your theme.
2. Do your research. Check out their customer service record by Googling on the business. Trust me, on the Internet people are not shy about their discontent.

Why is customer service important? Customer service should be important to an affiliate marketer because it can affect your creditability and sales. When you are thinking about joining an affiliate program of a business that matches your theme, you should look to see how customers are liking the company’s service. That is an easy task to accomplish because there are sites that give ratings with customer comments. And if the company is on top of their game, they will also be monitoring these sites, to respond when necessary to the customer’s comments.

If you do see a company responding to the customer to resolve an issue, you know the company is making an effort to work with the customer’s complaint.

3. Even when you use Affiliate Brokerage Firms – you need to do your research on the companies that you want to promote on your site.

Indicators When Companies Decide to Close Their Affiliate Program

Yes, companies may decide to close their affiliate program because of loss profitability. When a company decides not to continue an affiliate program, it is usually a business courtesy if they let the affiliate know that they are discontinuing their affiliate program at such and such date. I’ve had this happen once, which I greatly appreciated. However, there were others that did not do so.

So how do you identify the company that is going to close their doors to their affiliate program? Here are some indicators:
1) There links are not maintained; 2) They no longer send you updates if they were regularly doing so in the past; 3) You get no answers to your emails. 4) Your links suddenly begin erroring out. 5) Payment stops.

Using Affiliate Brokerage Company To Save Guard Your Business

I have found that using an affiliate brokerage firm can help me to protect my revenue in many cases. When a company decides an affiliate program is not profitable they first try to keep the program alive by reducing the percentage payout, then payments begin to dwindle before stopping completely.

With a reputable affiliate brokerage firm, they will notify you if:

1. The company is not paying. The brokerage firm will state that they will no longer be honoring the click through sales on such and such date, and to begin removing your links. Yes, the affiliate brokerage firm will pay you for your sales created before that date.

2. The affiliate brokerage firm will also notify you if the company has not renewed their contract with the affiliate brokerage firm -and to again, begin removing your links because any sales will not be honored. Sometimes you’re surprised with a link that says, “Sorry this affiliate program is not currently active”. When I see this, I take the link off. It’s usually a good indicator that not all is well with the company’s affiliate program.

As you can see, you can make money with affiliate programs, if you take the time to do your research. Try to choose reputable companies that will honor their obligations to you and to your visitors. If you find or sense something is not right with an affiliate program, remove it. Protect yourself and your visitors.
