Link Bait-What is it?

Link Bait-What is it?
By Vickie J. Scanlon

If you’re new to the Internet, you’ve probably have seen or come across in your reading about the importance of “Link Bait”. But what exactly is link bait.

Link baiting is the creation of an article that is unique or interesting that people, because of it’s content, want to link too.

Grabbing the Reader

Here are some different ways to possibly grab a reader: News, Attack, Informational, Humor and Tools.

News- News is news unless you can put a different twist on the article.

Attack– This is a mean-spirited personal attack on a person or about a product. Just by the nature of the attack you can understand the stir that it can cause. However, you definitely have to have a tough skin approach to the backlash you may stir up.

Informational– An informational article may summarize a bunch of information for it readers into a meaningful way, per the writer’s own observations or interpretation.

Humor – I ‘ve seen many blogs do this. It’s jokes, funny pictures, funny stories-which may hit the funny bone of some and thus, elicit a link.

Tools – Create a tool that people find useful.

Link bait, can be a good white hat tactic if you make it fun, informative, or creative, with an emphasis on quality. I’m sure many don’t even think of an article as link-bait when they are writing their article. In most cases, they are looking at giving their readers quality content, be it informative, fun or creative in nature.

Images and Search Engine Optimization

Images and Search Engine Optimization
By Vickie J. Scanlon

Keywords to images are just as important in your Search Engine Optimization process as keywords to content. Many forget about images, thinking only textually when considering the Search Engine Optimization process.

Image to Keyword Marriage

When you think of images and websites- you may assume as many, that the purpose of an image is to add a little aesthetic beauty to your site. It can and it does, but images can do much more.

Labeling your Images

If you have a catalog or Ecommerce site it can identity the product or service to the visitor and to the search engine. With the proper label the visitor can, of course, identify what the product is, as can a search engine. But you should also identify your image within your coding as well.

With proper labeling of your images with the “alt” tag, along with a visual front-end caption you will give yourself a better chance of getting your images/content indexed by the search engines.

Thumbnails

If you do have a lot of pictures, it is also wise to use thumbnails where possible. This will help to speed up your load time, for those with slower Internet connections. On the Internet, people seem to be a little more in a hurry-and will not hesitate to click the mouse to move on to another site.

In fact, some directory sites are becoming more image-based, giving the person an image to look at, before sending them to the site.

Side Note: Be aware that there are image-based robots that can hit your site. Their purpose may be to scrape your site of images, and while doing so, steal your bandwidth. If you find a strange robot hitting your site, it is always wise to do a Google search on the robot in question. If the robot has any scruples at all, they will have a website stating who they are, what they are doing, and if their robots are not behaving to your liking, how you can stop their robot from visiting.

Accessibility

Here is another reason for identifying your images-through alt tags, captions and labels- it’s called accessibility. It is not only the sighted that will view your site, but the unsighted as well.

For example, some of the software used by blind individuals are, Text-to-speech software. And, the text-to-speech software does utilize “alt tag” for images, as well as properly named links. So, if you’re not utilizing the alt tag, you’re missing out on a ready market.

To conclude, images can be asset to your site, not only giving you the aesthetic look that you want, but also helping you to reach a large visitor base, and just as importantly, making your image site search engine friendly.

Google Adding New Feature- Ad Review Center

Google Adding New Feature-Ad Review Center

Google is slowly moving a new feature into production for it publishers-It's called the Ad Review Center. The purpose is to allow you to review the ads -targeted to your site. This will enable you to ensure that the ads that are placed on your site, is relevant to your site's users.

You'll be able to see:
1. ads currently targeted to your site
2. ads previously run on your site

If you find an ad that is not relevant for your users, you can block the ad in the Ad Review Center. But they do suggest that you be careful about what you block. Why? The ads you block will no longer compete in the auction on your site, and thus, these advertisers may choose in the future not to advertise on your site.

If you block the ad you will be asked to give a constructive reason for the block. This information will be shared with the advertiser. They do stress that the information be constructive, so as to help the advertiser to improve in the quality and relevancy of their ads.

This new feature will be launched over the new several months. You will know that it has been enabled when you see a green notification box at the top of your 'Competitive Ad Filter' page, which is located under the 'Adsense Setup" tab.

There also will be a method in which you can manually review your ads before they are allowed to run on your site. To manually review your ads before they appear on your site you will need to:

1. click on "update setting" link in the Ad Review Center. You'll have 24 hours to review ads before they go live on your site.

However, they strongly suggest that you keep your review preference set to "auto-allow" and review the ads after they have run. Why? So as not to impact your revenue earning potential.

how much of tax do I need to pay of my income from google adsense if I have an account registered as an individual publisher?

Google has published Google Adsense tax information at the following URL:

https://www.google.com/adsense/static/en...

Is Adsense Reliable?

Adsense is NOT A FRAUD. It is run by the biggest search engine Google and it has been an important money maker for Google.

Note however that you only get paid IF AND ONLY IF you reach $100 in revenues every month - if not, your income is rolled over to the next month until you reach $100 in revenues.

As to what topic your site should be? The topic that works well with Adsense are those topics that attract visitors who are inclined to spend money.

Travel is a good topic because if you have a travel site where you provide content on what places to see in Bilbao, Spain and the audience you will attract are those looking forward to going to Spain. Hence, the ads that will be shown such as hotel ads, tour ads, luggage ads, airfare ads will most likely interest the users -- and they will click.

Any other advice for Google AdSense?

Follow the TOS and Program Policies VERY CAREFULLY -- they kick out publishers deemed generating "invalid clicks" which is their catch all term for cheating -- from asking users to click on ads to clicking your ads yourself to showing competing contextual ads on the same page as Adsense

- In terms of ad placement, check Google's heat map as they have tested where the best placements are https://www.google.com/support/adsense/b...

- Some types of ads do better than others depending on your content and layout. In our case, large rectangles in the middle of the content is the best, while leaderboards do not generate as much as income. Skys are the worst for us. Experiment and measure the results via channels and see which formats work best for you.

- Smartpricing - the big unknown in Adsense. No one knows how this actually works. But it can affect the pricing of the ads on your site. If the advertiser paid for $0.50/click - but your site is smartpriced - then the cost may be discounted lower (e.g. $0.25). So you may try to develop a site based on high paying keywords but if smartpricing gets to you, then you may not get as much per click as what you are expecting from your keywords.

Here is Google's explanation of smart pricing https://adwords.google.com/support/bin/a...

Google's smart pricing feature automatically adjusts the cost of a keyword-targeted content click based on its effectiveness compared to a search click. So if our data shows that a click from a content page is less likely to turn into actionable business results -- such as online sales, registrations, phone calls, or newsletter signups -- we reduce the price you pay for that click.

Experiment with the factors above (except smartpricing, which you can't control), and see which combination works best. Remember though that not all sites do well with Adsense - even if you get gazillions of traffic but your visitors are not interested in looking for ways to spend their money, they won't be interested in your ads and won't click.

How often does Google Pay out-- do they send you a check or do they use paypal?

Google does not use Paypal. They either send a check or send your payment via electronic fund transfer. They send their payments about 20-25 days after the end of the month in the US (speed of course depends on your location). Read Google Adsense Payments Guide https://www.google.com/adsense/support/b...

What fraction of users that visit a web site with Google AdSense actually click on the ads?

It depends on a number of things -- the topic of the site, the relevance of the ads to the site, and the purpose of the audience in visiting the site. A site that gives tips on finding a mortgage will attract users actively looking for a mortgage provider -- and will most likely click on the ads. That site can enjoy high click through rates. A dating site on the other hand where visitors are looking for dates, are not likely to be interested in the ads and hence CTR can be low.

Decision-Making Processes and the Human Factor

Decision-Making Processes and the Human Factor

By Vickie J Scanlon

It would definitely make selling products easy if everyone had the same process of making a buying decision. But that is not the case. For example, women more then men, want more content when making a buying decision. Well, since I am a woman, I can say I definitely fit that description.

Then there are the following types of people whether man or woman:

The “I got to have it” type of individual. These are the individuals who will stand in line for hours to be the first to buy a new product, or to run you over or grab the product from your hands, just to get to the product first. Every seller loves these types of people (not the rudeness) – but the get it now mentality.

The Johnny come lately type- These are the individuals who have the wait and see attitude. If the product is new, they will make sure all the bugs are out of the product before getting their feet wet. They will examine it, read all the information, ask others if they have tried it and liked it. They may even possibly keep up on the product for several months to see if there are any bad comments floating about. Sometimes this type of hesitation causes them to lose out on a true deal-and yet other times, it can save them money.

Budget-minded – I want it, but I will wait till I can afford to buy it. Unless of course, they think it is a need or the product is going to be gone in days.

Here is an example of a budget-minded individual. There was this one individual, I’ll call him Budget Denny. He went into a department store with the sole purpose of buying a tie. He looked around for a while and found a really nice looking tie. He examined it, checked out the price, felt the texture of the material, and put it back down.

His friend, Inpatient John said, “Come on, I know you want the tie, buy it.” Budget Denny quietly shook his head in the negative. “No,” he said, I believe I need to wait a day on this buy. Just to think it over.”

Inpatient John just looked at him. What was Budget Denny doing? He wanted to make sure he needed it and not just wanted it. As you know, “need” is different from “want”. If it’s “a want” you can wait on it for a while. A need is, well, what you decide mentally as a necessity. As to inpatient John – he realized the importance of the lesson from Budget Denny and he too has since followed this individual’s example. (By the way, this was a true story. Only the names were changed to reduce embarrassment.)

In most cases, a lot of online buyers are like budget-minded Denny. They need to think about it. They may bookmark your web page of interest and come back later. They will mull over the price and the perceived benefits of purchasing the item.

They may be thinking: 1) Is it a true need-(“Will this product or service really help me?”); or 2) I know what the going price of this product is- and know that this is a great discounted price, but do I have enough money to buy the product; or 3) it’s a close out sale and I doubt I’ll have the opportunity to purchase it later; or 4) I like the return policy. If I don’t like it, they guarantee I can return it in the next 30 or 60 days-with no questions asked.

As you can see, people look more than at price. They look at need- real or perceived, with a guarantee. The guarantee and the perceived need can ward off buyer regret. So when you are writing your sales copy, remember it's rarely an analytical exercise, but an emotional exercise that you need to address.
