Keyword Density

What is Keyword Density?
By Vickie J. Scanlon

Keyword Density is not used by all of the search engines, but the practice is still used by some. Translated, if you want to reach more than Google-and increase your target market-then you may want to look at your keyword density.

Keyword Density Defined

Keyword density is the percentage of the total word content on a web page against the keywords.

For example if you have 200 words on your web page and you have 5 keywords that you are emphasizing you would get the keyword density by taking the total word count and divide it by the 5 keywords. Since keyword density is a percentage you would take that total and multiply it by 100.

Example:

5 divided by 200 keywords=.025, then .025 * 100=2.5%
I would say for each specific keyword you should have a percentage of between 4% and 8%. Anything over that, could be seen as spam.

Keywords Placement

Keywords should be place within the Title and the description. The keyword meta tag is not used by all search engines. With that being said, that is why you will have a disagreement as to use it or not to use the keyword meta tag. Why? Some say the big search engines do not us the keyword tags. Yes, that may be, but the small search engines may. Others don't like to give their secret (their keywords) out to those who venture onto their site. Well, that leaves the decision up to you.

Last but not the least, your link would do better if your major keyword or several keywords are present within the link. Translated-which I learned the hard way-be conscious of the naming of your web page links.

To conclude, keyword density may not hold a high degree of relevancy in the realm of Google, but with the other search engines, yes. So, when you create your keyword list- use care-and you may pull in many search engines and most importantly, traffic to your site.
