It's that time!! I've officially uploaded the new and improved Analyzer, and it's ready for you all to jump on. BEFORE YOU DO, allow me to give you some info on what you're going to see.
Tab: READ ME
This tab gives an overall explanation of the added features and whatnot.
Tab: Team Analyzer
OK here's the new and improved Team Analyzer. Right off the bat you'll notice there's a box for you to input the size of your league, currently set at 12 (my league). When you modify this, it adjusts the Stat Targets (sauce) accordingly. ALSO this new analyzer will adjust the sauce based on how many players you can start on your team. You don't have to do anything for this, it does it automatically. ALSO, I've added bench slots. This is JUST for people in Head to Head, and shows the relative benefit you get from the guys on your bench. ALSO I added FG%, FT%, and have input Sauce numbers for OREB and DREB. Pretty neat stuff.
Tab: Player Analyzer
This is completely new. All you do is enter a players name in the player name line, and it will compute a score on that player, and highlight the box to let you know if he is a Buy Low, Hold or Sell High. Now admittedly, this is a bit more conservative than I am (I see more Buy Lows than it does, same for Sell Highs), but it's going to be a great check for you in trading. I really tough tested this thing, it's legit.
Tab: Player List
A list of every player available for the Analyzer. It covers 99% of the players in the NBA. Be sure to enter a players name as he appears in this list. LastName,FirstName and for longer names it gets truncated (i.e. Lamarcus Aldridge is aldridge,lamarcu).
Tab: Terms of Service
This says don't try to steal my stuff and sell it as your own, else I'll sue you. LOL Legal mumbo jumbo.
Tab: Raw Data
You don't need to worry bout any of this, it helps process all the background data.
Don't try to understand the math behind it, cause you won't really be able to. There's a lot that goes into the stats, a lot of different modifiers and whatnot, and the final scores have little to do with stats.
What I do ask is this: from now on, when we're all talking about our Sauce numbers in the comments, instead of giving me your team sauce, give me the Over/Under scores. It gives me more insight into what you are up against.
Well that's about it! You KNOW I love Feedback so offer it up. I hope this really addresses everything everyone asked for. If there's any bugs, let me know, but I feel good that we covered everything. Hope you find it helpful!

dan, i like the KG for Bynum deal, but I bet you could squeeze more. Send him a counter, ask for a little more, like a 2-2 swap, u ship JR or something and get an upgrade. Tell him with Gasol's torn hammy (we don't know yet, but tell him it is anyway) Bynum will be a monster. As for the ariza deal, just tell him to come back to you when he's serious about trading for the top player in basketball right now lol.

and the to's stat that your supposed to reach is set at 0.564 that doesn't sit right with me considering every single one of my players has 1+ to's per game

Thief this is the best analysis work I have seen in quite a while and I look at formulas & variances on a regular basis for a living. You really outdone yourself with this calculator update. Keep up the great work! Look forward to using this to gain an edge in my Fantasy league.

Thief, I'm still trying to sell high on Tyreke Evans, although I like him so much...LOL What would you think of offering him for Paul Pierce in a straight 1-1? (You might not recall, but I had Pierce back when his FG % was still unrealistically high and sold him to his current owner, who suffered through Pierce's mean reversion...LOL)

ReplyDeleteBut there was just one more thing (besides the one that Adam pointed out) that seemed strange to me, when I tried it out:
I entered all of my players, except injured B.Griffin, cause I rotate all of them into my starting line up. And the more players I was entering, the lower the stat targets became. When I had all 12 players in, the stat targets were so low, that I was "over" (though not by much) in almost every statistical category. And that is completely contrary to what the old SS Calculator was telling me about my team (same players)! With it I was "under" almost everywhere and had several red categories (apparently both you and your calculator didn't like young players, which my team has plenty of :P).LOL
How do you explain that?

@ Christo - the stat targets lower to take into account the more players on each roster, which means your going to have weaker players on everyone's team,

and i downloaded the new copy and i'm looking at the TO values again and its showing .003 as my value. I also tried subbing in jason richardson for lebron james and the red box ended up becoming worse it went from -.788 to -1.020, which was wierd considering lebron puts up more to's than jason

ReplyDeleteI'm not exactly 100% sure on this one but I think what the calculator is "thinking" is that the more players you have on each roster the harder the stats will be to come by so therefore it is lowering the target. Because a league of 12 people where you ONLY HAVE 5 players on your entire roster will be easier but harder (there's some irony for you) to get better stats as opposed to a league of 12 where you have 15 players on the roster will be harder but easier (there's that irony again) to get better stats. Hope that wasn't too complicated to understand.

ReplyDeleteFor example, could the rank score of each player appear somewhere on the "Team Analyzer" tab too, so everyone can see the value of all their players more easily? Or maybe just put in more than 6 fields for players on the "Player Analyzer" tab, so that it's possible to enter all the players and see their rank score at the same time?
I was able to check it for all my players, but it took time and I had to write it down in another file.
Also, with your great experience and knowledge of statistical sciences, could you possibly come up with an estimate of approximately what the average rank score of a team's players should be in order for that team to be relatively successful? In case you can do that, you could also make it show not only the individual ranks scores of the players, but also the average for the team and compare it to that estimated one, needed for success.

ReplyDeleteOK, for one Christo these guys have it nailed down. Put it this way, with 5 starters on your squad it's easy to average 20 points per game, but with 10 starters, no way you can average that high, ya dig?
Adam good stuff. It's actually working correctly, but i did have to fix the same thing i fixed before so it was good to look at. So yeah there's a new version, which fixes the .003 to more like .3 lol, stupid parentheses. So anyway, you can upload it. However to answer your other question re: lebron and sjax, it's got to do with the formula. To show you what i mean, try putting in LBJ for someone that averages just 1 TO per game.

ReplyDeleteOn a two person team, if I have Kobe And Carmelo, I have two very highly ranked guys, but they would lose to a team of say Nene and Gerald Wallace. Heck if it were all about ranks, we wouldnt need the analyzer!!

Thief amazing work it truly gets deep into the stats of fantasy basketball - and letting those stats drive your decisions. That along with the advice you offer to people is a great mix for the ideal advice! My question to you. Yesterday I sent Kidd+Marion for KevMartin+Hedo. He declined and sent back KevMartin+JuhanHoward for Kaman+JNelson. I don't really want to do this trade. Should I keep it simple and try to go Kidd for KevMartin strait up? Roto league, 13 GMs, keep 3 at the end. 12 cats (FGM, FG%, FTM, FT%, 3PTM, 3PT%, PTS, REB, AST, BLK, ST, TO). thanks

@ loho: Cassipi is a good pickup lately. I find that with the new analyzer if you try to plug in FA's into your bench section it will give you a better picture of who benefits your team more. Hope that helps!

ReplyDeleteIs the projected team FG% that comes up a simple arithmetic mean of the FG%-s of all players or is the number of shots each player takes taken into account?
I mean - Mike Dunleavy and Brandon Jennings have the same awful FG%, but with Jennings taking 17.6 shots per game, his FG% should decrease the team's FG% more than Dunleavy's (10.0 shots pg), shouldn't it?
Does the Analyzer adjust for that factor?

thief,i set the team analyzer with 20 teams. i am just trying to point out that it is high.. back then when i have your old calcu, my starting five has 1 green and all are yellows, but right now all of them are reds with 1 green.

ReplyDeletesup thief. been studying the new spreadsheet for a couple days now and very helpful stuff. regarding the O/U analysis, i just have one question. from my understanding, greens are good to have because it shows where you are strong, yellows are you are within target, and red are something that needs to be addressed. my question is regarding TO. given that TO is a negative stat shouldnt it be good to have a lower stat on that. my question came about because i have granger and was looking for possible players that i could trade for. so i plug in different players, and i came to kevin durant. with granger in my team o/u for TO is -0.285 (red), but when i plugged in durant, which we know is on top of TO/gm, the o/u becomes -0.244 and is yellow. i expected o/u for turnover to deviate farther from your secret sauce, but when i added a player with higher TO it came closer. can you please clear this up. thanks.
ReplyDeleteRitzi, sure can! For starters I am using the inverse of TO's, so that corrects for the fact that TO is a bad stat. Also, the Durant to Granger thing was mentioned above too. It's got to do with calculations and deviations. The score improves but really it's just reflecting that you aren't much better off as they are pretty close in TO's. Swap him for a guy like beasley and you'll see the difference.
ReplyDeleteHowever there was a bug in the formula that I fixed after reading Adams post above so b sure you have the file after that.
Finally, as I'm sure everyone knows, don't read too much into TO's anyway as it's almost a certain that if you're gonna win your league, you'll be red in TO's. All the best players are high TO guys.

Quick question thief, if my league is one where u change who you start everyday (meaning almost all players get played for every game unless you choose not to play them), should I put any on the bench for the analyzer or put everyone in util?
ReplyDeleteSorry thief, to restate that question. I have a 16 player roster, where 12 play everyday, but that essentially means all their stats contribute since I can switch my lineup daily. However your analyzer only has 14 active spots, so should I put my players on the bench in the analyzer even though they arent really bench players? Thanks man, great work btw I love it!
