Last Month's Average Stats

We can use the Analyzer and pump players in, we can look for articles that list guys out, but I’ve got an even easier way to help you find those key Buy Low and Sell High targets we’re all looking for: Last Month Average Stats. Most default stat lists, such as Yahoo or ESPN will default to the Season Total stats and then rank players from there. They have the option to change the periodicity (week, month, season) as well as the method (average or total), but people often overlook these. For my work I like to set it to Average stats over the last Month. Here’s why:

When we sort by season stats, the most prominent stat we are looking at is Games Played. If a guy missed a month this season, but has been a monster since he’s returned, he still won’t look as good as an average player that hasn’t missed a single game. Ok that’s the obvious stuff. What it also shows is each manager in your leagues relative frustration level with a specific player. If a player has underperformed for the whole season, chances are pretty good that his owner has gone well past the frustration level and into stubbornness. He’s likely now convinced this guy is going to have a monster second half. For us, chances are pretty good that a guy who has underperformed from day one, and hasn’t had any significant injuries, just isn’t very good anymore. A good example of this is Shawn Marion.

On the flip side, a player that has underperformed for the last month has really, just gone cold. These are the guys most managers are dying to dish off. It gets them scared, they wonder if the player will ever return to glory or if he’s doomed for failure. They fear they must trade him now before his value goes even lower. They enter into fire sell mode, and start rapid firing offers out to everyone, usually asking for way too much. If the guy is a Tier Three player, they’ll send him out asking for a Hot Tier Three player in return. No one is going to take your cold Tier Three for their Hot Tier Three, that’s just plain stupid. And thus everyone will send back a prompt rejection…..everyone but US. Take a glance at those Average Stats over the last month, sort the players by their preseason rank (I know you can do this in Yahoo, not sure about ESPN), then read through the list for those guys with a huge difference in the ranks. For some, we can just ignore and skip over, like (again) Shawn Marion (no I will never buy him low). But some are those hidden gems we’re digging for. About four days ago, one of the best that would pop up for you would’ve been Jason Richardson.

Richardson was a prime target. Hot start, quick extended decline, prime for the plucking. I snagged him up for pennies on the dollar in my league, and I hope you all followed suit. The buy low is door is quickly closing on him. Look to offer a Hot Tier five or maybe even Tier four player in the deal. One guy that’s ripe to be dealt is Randy Foye, people love him and his potential. He’s never going to go higher than Tier Three (this season anyway) so why not ink a deal for a guy we know is in that Tier.

Oh yeah, my latest run through of the Average Month Stats and rankings, brought up some solid buy low candidates like Al Jefferson, Lamarcus Aldridge and even Carlos Boozer….bet you didn’t know that last one, unless you owned him of course!

So what are you waiting for? There’s offers to be made!

  2. @nhern: You gotta stay put my man. Unless you can package Foye(sell high) and Haywood for some solid player a 2-1 deal. I wouldnt budge.

Is it stupid? I dont need reb and blks

  8. @ clint: how big is your leage?

    ReplyDelete
  9. @ Scola: Thats a pretty decent deal. Good enough to ink it. Whats your over/under look like?

    ReplyDelete
  10. Scola, nit a bad deal bro. Hibberts value drops when granger n Murphy are healthy.

Y4, not yet but looking now...

Q, good lookin out bro. I appreciate the help. Your advice has been spot on. These guys are enjoying two thief's!

  11. Hey Thief I think you missed my post. thanks

    ReplyDelete
  12. Sorry bout that. First things first, you should download the analyzer and run your team thru it. We need to 'see' where your team is really strong and weak, then we can decide who to target and who to deal. I hear you that u lose treys each week, but we need to see how much of that is based on luck. Then we can work some 2-1 and 2-2 deals to move udrih, Webster and Nate rob. I think we'll be targeting KG, Pau and maybe Deron from those squads.

The analyzer link is on top of the sidebar on the right. Run the numbers an let us know what you find. Also give me a list of the top 5 FA's available. Ya feel me?

    ReplyDelete
  13. Some guy offered me Jason Thompson for my Randy Foye, do you think I can milk him to give me more?

    ReplyDelete
  14. Stone, Definitely! Target Tier 3. He likely wants to move a big and get dimes so keep that in mind.

EVERYONE wants the hot player!! Lol

    ReplyDelete
  15. @waldo and @quan

my league is 10 teams...i got over on some ppl earlier in the year on some trades so i know i have an excellent....but there is another team that did the same thing that i did and i can honestly say his team beats mine on a weekly basis....he is still makin big moves to get his team better he landed granger and jamison this week and already has a stacked team....the reason im still tryna get better is because i wanna be green in 4-5 categories so i can make sure i win this bread....

and my league is vetoing my thievin now so i gotta do sneaky thieves that ppl dont notice.....

    ReplyDelete
  16. Hey guys, just noticed this about Tony Parker!

"Parker revealed that he has been suffering from plantar fasciitis in his left foot, according to the San Antonio Express-News."

iirc, that's the same thing danny granger has been struggling with.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Hey Thief,

I'm currently holding onto Rashard Lewis, who I can't tell is either in a slump or just not playing the way he was last year. I'm one of those concerned owners but I know he has the potential to be that all-star again.

I'm getting Kevin Martin back this week so I'm thrilled since he brings 3PTM and STL (and my FT% should finally go up!), and now I'm wondering if I should trade Lewis away, maybe for someone shoots some 3s (less) but is at least more proficient than he is in other stats? He's hard to work with now since he's doing poorly and more of a BUYLOW than a tradeable player..

    ReplyDelete
  18. No problem thief just doing the site a service by spreading the word and letting everyone know US vs. Them is the reality of the fantasy sports.

Yeah right now I'm trying to acquire Caron Butler+Mo Will for my Foye+Frye. Now thats straight thievin dude.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Clint, sounds like you got a top heavy league. That can def skew the sauce. I agree you'll need to make moves then, my advice is to target smaller deals. People are less likely to veto smaller deals (since 'it's too big' is a reason for them to veto). We WILL bring you home that title!

Senn, good lookin out homey. Parker blows anyway.

DW, tough time to deal. I'd say, make offers like he IS an all-star and hope to snake someone. Else we wait for two big games to deal.

    Q, STRAIGHT Thievin, nice deal.

BIG site update coming tonight fella's. If all goes well, our clubs gonna have a sweet makeover!

    trevor ariza
    jose calderon
    josh howard
    stephen curry
    james harden

    Thanks in advance

  21. Speaking of what Senn just commented on, Thief can we get a funny article about the 20 plus players that have plantar fascitis. I swear its a boatload of guys suffering from plantar. Taj Gibson, Granger,Parker, Charlie, etcs. It's like attack of the plantars in the NBA. Everyone has bad feet. Thabo has it. Nocioni has it too lol.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Bruce! Terrible timing here. I agree you can deal Kaman, but that injury makes it tough. It ain't like the kids gonna miss the news. Still you couch it in a deal with Foye, which is good.

Here's the question: why not try LBJ for Foye and Melo first? Ink that, give Kaman a couple days, then shop him for AT LEAST an okafor?

    ReplyDelete
  23. Also, Thief. Big benefit reapings tonight. Turiaf is very questionable. AR is out indefinitely. We might clean up with Biedrins finally lol. I look forward to a nice statline.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Thief, How about getting Granger and Curry for Al Jefferson and Billups?

    ReplyDelete
  25. Q, Lol I hear Artest has it too!

    ReplyDelete
  26. Big update on Blake Griffin:
    According to NBA.com-
The Clippers have announced that Blake Griffin will undergo additional surgery on his left patella. The surgery will force him to miss the next 4-to-6 months, effectively ending his season.

    ReplyDelete
  27. thanks thief i thought to offer melo and foye but the guy probably wants more for LBJ, seeing as though he made a remark of "LBJ is a triple double monster"

    ReplyDelete
  28. Ismael, selling a bit low on AJ an Billups there? I'm targeting AJ in my offer lol.

On a side note: they're shutting down Blake Griffin for the season. OUCH!

    ReplyDelete
  29. Qwan you beat me to it i was about to report that ......owner in my league was real rude when i made an offer on griffin lat week so im gonna laugh at him.

    ReplyDelete
  30. wow dropping griffin and taking back miller, thx for the heads up

    ReplyDelete
  31. if kaman misses significant time--watching for mri results tommorow and with the griffin news, two words, deandre jordan......looking forward to the update thief!

    ReplyDelete
  32. Thief, or anyone from Miami, what are you hearing about Wade's injuries? I am hearing that he is getting beat up, and his wrist is bothering him. Does it sound like he is going to be missing time? Should I look to deal him?
    Thanks for your input.

    ReplyDelete
  33. im gonna try and trade rape him now.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Yo Thief,

Got a quick question, i'm in a 10 team H2H league. I've got an owner who really wants to sell on Rashard Lewis and I'm thinking about offering Carl Landry. Seems like a straight thievin' in my opionion. My FG% is already low so losing Landry for a lower % doesn't seem to bother me that much. Adding Lewis into the team analyzer keeps my FG% in the red but puts my 3PG into the green.

Over and unders before the trade:
    FG%: -0.277
    FT%0.684
    PPG:0.035
    RPG:-0.223
    APG:-0.054
    SPG:-0.227
    TOs:-0.044
    3PG:0.138
    BPG:0.052

  35. I just sent griffin owner my yi, perkins(who he had just recently dropped), lou will, and elton brand for his boozer, manu and galinar, what you think? if he dosnt want i can even throw b gordon in and biens in on FA

    ReplyDelete
  36. Yo Thief, what about JR Smith and his general better playing after the allstar ? How long you feel is worth waiting for the ship to sink even more, a week, two, take him now (you could probably get him for a decent week-ago-FA) ?

    ReplyDelete
  37. I offered Stephen Jackson and Brendan Haywood for Andre Iguodala and Emeka Okafor. I like this trade, but Jackson has been good all year and i dont honestly gain much from this. Im doing this, because Haywood has never averaged more than 10 rpg in a season before and i dont want the drop off back to his career stats. So, do you think Brendan Haywood is for real this year? He has never played over 30 mpg in a season before, so its hard to tell if hes legit or not.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Hi Thief! Great job on the analyzer & the site. I want to sell high on Foye, and the analyzer says I'm Straight Thievin' if I trade him for Calderon.

However, Calderon looks like he's going to be in a timeshare situation with Jack. What do you think? Is Calderon's current situation taken into account in the analyzer?

    ReplyDelete
  39. Do you think I'd be better off with a Butler or Aldridge or J-Rich moving on in the season?

I'm moving towards Butler or J-Rich since I'm stacked at PF/C and Aldridge doesn't seem to steal or block that much.. Butler doesn't hit that many 3s and hasn't shot the ball well but I like the steals, J-Rich might be the hardest to get since he's doing the best out of the 3 it seems.

Or perhaps there's another player I should target?

    Again my team is:
    PG: D-Will, Rondo, Mo-Will
    SG: Wade, Roy, Kevin Martin
    SF: Iguodala, Lewis
    PF: Jamison, Love
C: Al Jefferson, B-Lopez, Bargnani, Noah

    Thanks again!

    ReplyDelete
  40. Thief,

    Pray Tell,

    I give up
    R Gay
    Y Jianlian
    A Iverson

    I get
    R Lewis
    C Butler

Was thinking of switching Iverson out with J Nelson, I don't think it will fly with Iverson in there.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Damn it thief,

If only the news of Griffin would have come yesterday I might have snagged the CP3 deal I was talking about. Oh well I am still happy with Durant/Calderon/Lou Williams for my Carmelo/Kaman/Harris trade, I still think I was the thievin one..hehehe.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Qwan, man I didn't even see your post about griffin, i posted something just a few minutes after you, damn internet connection. lol

    ReplyDelete
  43. All right thief I put together a doozy here. What do you think? I ran it through the analyzer and it looked good, but your thoughts. I give up D Wade, J Johnson, David West, and M Okur and get K Durant, T Murphy, A Iuodala, Biedrins, L ALdridge.
Your thoughts? I hoping he takes this deal.

    ReplyDelete
  44. AC its cool at least everyone knows now. I was going to try to Get D-wade & Griffin from this manager who is not making the playoffs. Glad I know now lol.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Bigl im in miami and wade wont play tonight, ill keep u posted on what i hear.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Shaff, thanks for the update Big Dog, that is very helpful.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Update on Biedrins starting situation:

Turiaf is out tonight against the Heat. Which means Biedrins(starting) & Vlad Rad owners will see increased minutes against a weaker front court of J. O'neal & Beasley.

Good to reap the rewards of a good thievin lol.

    ReplyDelete
  48. who's the best pickup for me i'm dropping griffin, and i can also drop hinrich if there is someone better. all my stats are yellow except fg% which is red.

players available - conley, robinson, miller, stojakovic, haslem, warrick, will bynum, corey brewer, cj watson and al thornton

i'm considering warrick, stojakovic, conley and haslem the most

    ReplyDelete
  49. My question is: What do you think about Jason Thompson right now? I couldnt sell him high last month and now he is in an offensive slump. He is losing he double-double avg appeal as well.

    ReplyDelete
  50. @ Adam: Check out thief's analysis on the situation in Milwaukee and then see if Warrick will work for you going for a short-term solution. I mean since Griffin has done squat ever in his NBA career I would say something is better than nothing right?

    ReplyDelete
  51. Dwyane Wade's X-rays on his sprained wrist came back negative, but he is questionable for tonight now.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Has anyone heard about a trade rumor involving Andrew Bynum for Chris Bosh?

I just read this on yahoo.

"Andrew Bynum said he hadn't heard about the trade rumor sending him to Toronto for Chris Bosh and said "I don't really care"

    ReplyDelete
  53. senn this is old news

    the trade would probably be

    bynum+morrison+farmar=bosh

    ReplyDelete
  54. hey thief whats ur take on kevin martin??? what kind of numbers do u think he will put up. I was offered him for my rashard lewis (who is driving me nuts right now) and josh howard

    ReplyDelete
  55. Ok Thief, I have the numbers now..
    my over/under are:
    FG%:.313
    FT%:.001
    PPG:.167
    RPG:.184
    APG: -.394
    SPG:-.047
    TO's:-.109
    3PG:-.287
    BPG:.097
    ORPG:.202
    DRPG:-.021

The only 2 in red were my assists per game and 3 pointers per game.
    So what do you think?

    ReplyDelete
  56. @ aaron I would hit the accept trade button so fast my keyboard might break lol. Gotta ink that deal hands down. Healthy Kev Mart "for pennies" as thief would say lol.

Also, Josh Howard is an injury bum anyway.

    ReplyDelete
  57. @Aaron: I would take that deal in a heartbeat! See what your weak in and get the guy to throw in one of his lesser players and you will making off like a bandit my man!

    ReplyDelete
  58. Bosh is not going anywhere before the deadline. There have been millions of rumors but I don't see any realistic trade that will move bosh out. Whether its with houston or anywhere else. thestar.blogs.com/raptors
has occasional mention of the rumours being ridiculous. If there was a realistic chance the toronto star would have had more on it.

    ReplyDelete
  59. hey guys, bear with me while i get the new site banner in place. :)

    ReplyDelete
  60. I just threw out 3 trade offers... we'll see if anyone bites....

remember, i'm in the really lame league where noone has traded a single player so far.

The only trade that went down through the entire season happened right after the draft when my buddy and I agreed to trade one of our draft picks when I lost my internet connection during the draft...

    LAME!

    ReplyDelete
  61. I forgot to menton the trades...

    trade 1
    get: bosh, westbrook
    give: bynum, parker, crawford

    trade 2
get: joe johnson, jeff green, o.j. mayo
    give: bynum, pierce, parker

    trade 3
    get: richardson, devin harris
    give: pierce, parker

obviously I'm trying to get rid of bynum and parker. Pierce is the only one i don't want to cut loose but i'm throwing him in as bait...

All 3 of those trades are a "good enough, ink it" on the team analyzer and I figure that's as good as I can get in my league since everyone is in love with their players and noone is willing to trade anyone who's halfway decent right now...

    ReplyDelete
  62. DAMN, love the new site layout / banner. Very snazzy thief =]

    ReplyDelete
  63. noah/williams for joshsmith/davis? is it really as straight thievin as the sheet says?

    ReplyDelete
  64. thats a i give for i get trade btw

    ReplyDelete
  65. aight, site update complete for now. I gotta run out for a bit but I've got my phone!

    DAMN YOU BLAKE GRIFFIN!

    ReplyDelete
  66. Yeah man, I'd say that's straight thievin'

    J Smoove > Noah
    Davis ~ D Williams

I'd take that deal in a jiffy. Besides, if you don't like Smith, you could EASILY deal him around.
