Easily, the single hardest thing to do in fantasy sports is to call it quits with a player you had high expectations for…..at least it should be the hardest thing to do. Owners tend to fall into one of two categories, either they cut bait on a player too fast, and essentially sell low on him, or they hold on for dear life from day one to the end of the season. Obviously neither of these scenarios is ideal, and obviously they don’t account for all the times we do make the right move, be it to continue holding or to drop quickly. Also, and again obviously, any B00B can sit back and tell you after the fact that you made a boneheaded drop, or boneheaded trade, or were stupid to hold so and so. This post aims to discuss the steps I like to take in the situation where a player has….gone cold.
To make the example, I’m going to use Jason Richardson, a player I own and unfortunately my timing on him was about a week early else I’d have gotten him a lot cheaper. J-Rich officially went cold on December 12th with an 8 point 5 board ugly performance. His next game was even worse, and then didn’t even play in the following match, all surrounding a minor hand injury.
Step #1 – Two Bad Games in a Row = Keep playing him
If I benched every guy on my team after a spate of two or three bad games, I’d miss out on an enormous amount of bounce back games. You know what that does; it takes the REVERSION out of MEAN REVERSION. So yeah, I don’t do too much quick benching. On the 19th J-Rich dropped 22 points and proved to me he still had it, but more importantly, by not benching him I was able to pick up the bounce back game stats. This is in essence a micro view at the Mean Reversion strategy working in process by the way, but it didn’t end there.
Step #2 – Three Bad Games in a Row = Decision Time
Can’t ignore this sign now, three tough games in a row following a stretch that was wholly uninspiring. Now’s where I face my choice, do I bench him or do I continue to play him, the thoughts Trade and Drop do NOT enter my mind. Seriously, trying to deal ANY player after a 3 game slump, with the latest being a 5 point performance is plain stupid. What could I possibly expect to get in return? You’re kidding yourself if you don’t think every single fantasy owner at least looks at the last 5 games he’s played in. If J-Rich were on another owner’s team, I’d be hammering him with Thieving offers right now, trying to vulture up another stud. I’d be counting on his worries hoping to score big. Buy Low, Sell High.
Back to the situation, and it’s decision time. Do I bench or do I continue to play him? Now I told you all before J-Rich is one of my ROTO studs. He provides a stat line that fits real nice into any lineup. I made the decision at that point to stick with him. So far so good as the next two games were gems, scoring 20 points in each, dropping two treys in each, shooting over 47% from the field in each. That’s the J-Rich I know, mean reversion works again.
But suppose I hadn’t chosen to stick it with him. Suppose this was Trevor Ariza or some other guy I wasn’t sold on. Suppose I come to decision time and I choose bench. Fine, he goes to my bench and another guy comes onboard and we watch. Again I’m not sending out trade offers here as that would be pointless unless I’m looking to toss up a partial birth abortion type deal.
Chances are though, that if I’ve gotten to the benching stage, I’ve decided that eventually I’d like to deal him. Read that again, if I benched him, I best have decided that eventually I want to deal him. Something about my original analysis of him has changed and I don’t want him anymore. We all make mistakes, fine.
So we watch him for a few games, maybe a week or so and we see how he progresses. Then comes the two back to back good games, 20ish points, 5+ boards, somewhere in that range. Here’s where it gets ugly, cause here’s where many will all of a sudden fall back in love with the guy, and go right back to playing him. You’re like a battered wife, he hits you and you’re all talking divorce, but once things settle down, you’re back in love. Bad Bad Bad fantasy owner. This is the PERFECT opportunity, and possibly the ONLY opportunity you’re going to get to deal him.
Mid performance on that second game, you need to be sending out those offers. Hammering everyone in your league. Check who needs what stats and dish him out there. Don’t be selling low, sell him like he’s right back in the swing of it. Get VALUE. Remember, everyone loves the hot hand, everyone loves to buy high, and this is the time to ink it. Hopefully you’ll pull it off, and hopefully you’ll get a more consistent player on the verge of an upswing who will offer some better consistency, crisis averted.
Step #3 – No Trade, Things Don’t Get Better, Time to Drop.
Maybe those back to back 20 point games don’t come. Maybe they came and you missed the opportunity, or no one bit the offers, and now he’s back slumping again. This time it’s longer, this time he’s on a 7 game bad streak. Ugh. It’s alright though; he’s been on your bench so he isn’t exactly hurting you. But again, we’re at decision time. Two choices, either try to dump him off low, which would be nice but unlikely, or send him to the graveyard WW. This is where many people cut bait on Charlie V. Rightly so, the dood was becoming a severe liability and there were better options out there.
Fine, done, he’s gone and now you’re holding someone new and the relationship is over. DON’T LOOK BACK. It’ll kill you. On the 8th game Charlie V posted a nice stat line and all the bait cutters had Seller’s Remorse. You ignored the fact that he was 4-6 from beyond the arc, a statistical anomaly. You’re upset and loathing the move. Who cares, move on. It’s your season, you made the decision, and I promise you this won’t be the ‘make or break’ choice for your season, so long as you followed the steps.
Stay consistent in your approach. If you have conviction in a player, if you’ve done the research, don’t dump him too quickly. Use your bench for what it’s supposed to be used for; benching a slumping player when it’s obvious he needs to be benched. Make the decisions when they need to be made. Don’t be that guy The Thief comes knocking on the door of, tempting you to sell low before you should. Be the Thief.
This is how we dominate our leagues. This is the road to victory.
P.S. I DID end up dumping Roy Hibbert earlier in the season. I DID end up going back to him. There was a material change in his playing time and situation and my analysis again changed. It was almost a month apart and it’s been a good move. It’s OK to do this, but have a better reason than ‘he just had one lights out game’.

what's up Thief?
ReplyDeleteSorry to hear about the forum, but it was a great idea!
What should I do with Luol Deng and his fractured hand? I acquired him last week in a 2-1 with me giving Landry and Curry, and hearing this news has me irritated a lil' bit
Where does Salmons stand in your book now?
ReplyDeleteAwesome article thief. Hey one question: I have Nene in one of my teams, he's currently ranked 9 in totals and 17th in averages. I tried to land Deron for a straight up after Nene's 25 pts 6 steal performance but he rejected. I know Nene is not on the top 3 tiers so basically I can "win" if I land any of them. But I wanted to get the MAX VALUE I can get for dealing him. Who can I get now for Nene? J-Rich? Anyone from tier 2? Thanks!
ReplyDeleteThief you hit this article right on the head lol. I have a couple of guys I want to cut bait. I never utilized my bench before but to put players in that slot that dont have a game that night. I want to cut bait on Ariza & Bibby sooo bad at times. Because they are so inconsistent that no one will cut a deal. lol. I had to let RJ loose he is at a point where he just stinks something terrible.
ReplyDeleteOn the other hand, I cut bait on Perkins & Duhon way too early. Especially Perkins!!! I should have known that KG would be back on the pine yet again and now Perkins is putting up close to Noah or K Love numbers each night lol.
Great article!
thief, the averages in your team analyzer are wrong. whats going on? Omri Casspi averages 12. not 9. Aaron Brooks averages 18.5, not 16
ReplyDeletenHern, LOVE the offer of Randolph for J-Rich
ReplyDeleteAndy, he's been more consistent coming off the bench lately. I don't think he's a dumper.
Makoy, I'll bet you could get J Rich AND another player for NeNe right now. Someone low level. Give it a shot!
Chatta, the averages are NOT solely this year, but more a projecion for the full season based on a weighted average of a multitude of factors, one of which (as our boy Christo has pointed out) is seasons played which mods Omri's numbers down slightly.
Also, the numbers get updated by me once a week (it's not a live feed, that's how we keep it free). You can bet Omri's numbers will rise in the next update).
Chatta, dude I think the PPG is affected by the age of the playa or if he's an aged vet or a rookie, or prone to injuries. Either that or there could be a minor bug. Just my 2 cents.
ReplyDeletehey thief great post, im trying to buy low on granger while i still can, with that being said i got offer this two trade
ReplyDeleteSend Bogut, Pierce, Tyrus Thomas, Elton Brandi receive Corey Maggette, Carlos Boozer, Granger or
Send Kevin Love, Bogut, Pierce,
Receive Corey Maggette, Gerald Wallace, Granger
are either of this trades good for me its a 10 team points league thanks for the help man
Luis, if it's good with the sauce it's good with the Thief!!
ReplyDeletehey thief, do you think roy and granger and w. chandler for t.duncan and kobe is bite-able? would i bet getting more out of it if i offered gwallace instead of danny?
ReplyDeletethanks!
youch! That's definitely bitable bro, thats a BOLD OFFER. Good luck!
ReplyDeleteThief is Tony Parker for Luis Scola a fair exchange? I'm stacked at PG position (DWill, JoeCool, LuisWill, Felton)
ReplyDeleteHey thief, what u think if i give up twan granger and stuckey for tyreke bosh and j rich?
ReplyDeleteHey Thief,
ReplyDeleteWhat do you think about me trading Durant and Granger for Iggy and LBJ.
Or Durant, Granger and Dampier for Iggy, LBJ and Marc Gasol.
Which is better?
Thanks!
Oh, and should I pick up Ben Wallace and drop Gooden?
ReplyDeleteWhat up Thief? I just got offered a trade. I get D Harris and P Gasol for Bryant. What do you think I should do? His other notables are Durant, J Johnson, and D Lee. This is a h2h 10 person league, currently first.

ReplyDeleteHey there Thief!
ReplyDeleteShould I dump Nate Robinson for Rafer Alston?
Thanks,
Matt
Well, Thief, everything you've said here, makes sense, as always ...except if it's a GSW player, cause nothing makes sense with players, coached by Don Nelson!
ReplyDeleteStill can't get over the loss of those 26 pts, 6 treys etc., which Curry had the other day, while he was on my bench :(
HomeG, I like that move, fo sho
ReplyDelete1Time, INK IT! Such a great time to buy J-Rich!
Akur, THAT'S WHAT I'M TALKIN ABOUT! Sharin sources!
Shorty Shorts, let's be sure we know how Gasol is feelin before we trade for him, cool?
Chuck, you gotta package YI maybe with FOYE after he has a solid 3 or 4 games played without Arenas. Try for a top PG, something from the Jameer or Mo Williams or Rondo range.
Matt, I would, but I know others here would disagree
Christo old buddy, you just gotta keep lookin forward.
Thief,
ReplyDeleteI didnt get your recommendation from above about trying to grab LBJ.
Thanks.
AK
WOW, AK both those are definitely sweet! I mean LBJ has Durant DOMINATED, then I'd say it's pretty even between Iggy and Granger ((heck I'd prefer Iggy right now), same thing for Gasol and Damp. INK IT
ReplyDeleteWill do, Should I try any other trade configs, like maybe J johnson or durant?
ReplyDeleteThief what's our take on the TJ Ford situation? I've come t the point where I think I should drop him but in a 20 team 10 man league, a good source of assits are hard to find. Im stashing him now but am wondering if I should drop him for cj.Miles, e.Maynor or m.Pietrus who can get me stats in other areas. Any suggestions?
ReplyDeleteHEy Thief, is Gordon (ben) and Ray Allen too much for Gerald Wallace in a dynasty league?
ReplyDeleteThief, get this. My league is trying to protest one of my trades and erase it off the boards. Have you ever had this situation. Any advice? I am thinking about quitting the league if they pull this crap.
ReplyDeleteSup thief, we i got a trade proposal, my Jamison & Richardson for his Josh Smith & Redd...Dont like it what he is offering me, since Jamison will have to pick up the load since Arenas is suspendend...What should I counter with? Dont really see any good players on his squad...

ReplyDeleteHey Thief,
ReplyDeleteI'm in a h2h league.. first place right now. Gilbert is out as far as I'm concerned, tho i have the luxury of holding onto him until final decisions are made by Stern.
What do u think of my Marc Gasol for his Duhon? keep me dominant in assists, and threes with arenas out.
I know I should post my sauce, but im just curious about value and future value. i feel like the 2 players are gonna be about even come year end.
If i did that trade I am also just on the cusp of sealing a deal which would get me dwight howard for channing frye and ersan ilyasova (my league counts 3pt%). What do you think?

bro i can't put the sauce. i know you remember my problems in the calculator. just need some bench support and i have no problems in my sauce stats.
thanks thief!
Shorts, def durant.
ReplyDeleteLanc, is Alston available by any chance?
Pavel, that's perfect thievery!
BigLil, I HATE that kinda garbage. Legit trades should never get pulled, ugh. I support u bailing if they do.
hey thief, how bout my comment? thanks!
ReplyDeleteThisa, take out redd and add Wade. Dudes askin for two roto studs!
ReplyDeleteDip, I think u got a shot at durant n Haywood.
Nick, u need duhon with arenas gone, so I think it's a great move. Lovin the other deal too, well done playa.
CJ? Did u catch my comment on the other page? Take iggy out n put in Gallinari bro. Don't b overpayin.
Kael, that's your call, I hear u tho. Just b sure you follow the steps! No selling Low!!
Jb, I'd rather see you deal omri. At least he's hot an u could get somethin decent for him. Maybe like a Tony Parker or manu ginobili or mike bibby.
ok. i'll try it but how bout peja? will i keep him or i will just let him be hot again and start to deal him? thanks!
ReplyDeleteuhm. thief another thing, should i trade now jermaine for another big man? thanks!
ReplyDeletePeja an jerm would net nothing in a trade, so what's the use trying to deal them?
ReplyDeleteit means that i just wait when will they be hot then try to trade them? is that it?
ReplyDeleteExactly. Dec 30 wouldve been a perfect time to try n deal jerm, ya feelin me? Between dec 18 and 23rd for peja woulda been good too.
ReplyDeletebut how about if peja and oneal produce big in their next game, should i execute the trade?in our league only 6 of us had done a move. it is january now. i dont think my co-owners just want to fix their roster in the mid-season for i have done so many adds and drops but i am still #1 in the waivers. it really sucks ya know.
ReplyDeletewho to start today?
ReplyDeleteUdrih (@GS), Casspi (@GS), Frye (Mia) he has been pretty solid at home, Vince (@Was), Perkins (Atl).
pick 4 to play and sit 1.
Jb, I know bro I know.
ReplyDeleteMcG, I'd sit Udrih for sure.
once Mike Miller is fully back, is it wise to drop Udrih for him? I have Mike on IR right now.

thief, i really need help. and also anyone else with comments. what should i do, i cant seem to get a trade for anything decent. also, should i just cut bait on the guard stats and concentrate on the 4 big men stats (fg,rpg, tos, bpg) and ppg so i can always get at least 5? and finally, what to do with shaq - drop him? thanks a lot, really aprreciated.
oh yea forgot to mention standard h2h with the typical 9 stats and 12 teams in the league
ReplyDeletesome advice on moves please? should i just forget this team and accept failure? (currently in 9th out of 12, 6 behind 8th and 7 ahead of 10th)
ReplyDelete1) we don't give up, especially when the season isn't even halfway over.
ReplyDelete2) at 22 MPG, Shaqs not helping us. I'd like to see you package shaq and gallinari, go after Boozer, or G Wallace or Z Randolph or Lopez or Al Jeff.
3) failure is not an option. Man up playa, the season is young!
alright, took your advice, but most didnt bite, nobody wants shaq. what do you think about him? hold on or drop to waivers?
ReplyDeletealso, i did get this intriguing proposal as a reply: my gallinari + david west for his boozer + vince carter
what do you think of the trade thief? also, all my info (sauce and team) are above. thanks a lot
