Four Players To Target

It’s getting to that point in the season where owners are ready to cut bait on players that have hounded them all season. Maybe a player was out with injury, and has been ineffective since his return. We know he’s just getting his legs back, but they think he’s ‘lost it’. Maybe the player has battled an injury all season, and has been inconsistent. We know he’s ‘hurt’ and will heal, they think he’s injured and one step from the shelf. Maybe the player went on IR and his backup came in and was effective. We know coaches tend to stick with their starters, but they think he’s lost his job for good. Here are 4 buy low players that I love right now. Caution! I wouldn’t go after more than two of these guys, no need to take on more risk than is necessary. And really, if you have any questionable players on your squad, maybe just go for one. When you do Ink this deal, be sure to place this guy on your bench until he proves he’s ready to roll (minutes per game will be the key, look for 30+).

1. Devin Harris – PG – NJ Nets
Harris is battling tendinitis in his wrist now, and that’s been the reason given for his ineffective shooting. Still, a recent MRI showed no serious damage, and Harris was held out of the last game as a precautionary move. When healthy and effective, Harris is at least worth 18 points, 6 assists and some steals. He came into the season as a top ranked player, and many people got burned taking him in the second round. If you made a low ball offer last month, they scoffed at you for rubbing it in that he’s been slow. Now, with this latest setback, they are ready to dump. I’d bet you could offer players like Foye (based on his potential production) or Andre Miller (who probably won’t keep up his current stat line when Blake returns).

2. Jose Calderon – PG – Toronto Raptors
Another guy owner’s are just dying to cut bait on. I got a call on Saturday from his owner in my league, sending out a feeler to see what I’d offer him. I told him ‘Sorry bub, no interest here’. I figure he’ll make the rounds this week, and I know everyone will avoid that situation (remember, no one likes to buy low, they only like to buy high) and I’ll snake through a low ball offer sometime on Thursday. They travel tonight for the second game of a back to back, then don’t play again til Friday. Timing should be perfect here. I have no doubt Jose will be their starting PG by the end of the season. He’s not a great source of points, but he is an awesome source of dimes.

3. Andris Biedrins – C – GS Warriors
I asked people to hold off early in December as we didn’t know much about Biedrins injury. Well, he’s back now and it doesn’t appear to be a cause for re-injury concern. Biedrins is my favorite in this group, and I actually already inked the deal. When healthy, he’s a lock for a double double with an average of a steal and 1.5 blocks per game. Best part is, he is dirt cheap right now. I offloaded Hibbert and Barbosa to snag him. I expect, at worst, he’ll give me Hibbert’s numbers. But with the return of Granger, Dunleavy and Murphy, Hibbert will be squeezed for time going forward. Biedrins has only Turiaf to battle for time, as Anthony Randolph went down with injury. Low low low ball here, his owners are completely disgusted (and likely missed the 5 blocks he had on the 5th, and 3 steals on the 8th). I’m likely to also start using him right away, as he can be very effective even in limited minutes.

4. Manu Ginobili – SG – SA Spurs
The Italian Stallion with a last name no one seems to get right (it’s GIN NO BLEE). Manu’s starting to get the minutes again and it’s showing up in his stat line. He’s a great guy to have on your squad, offering solid points and treys, but chipping in with good numbers everywhere else too. Manu battled injury early on this season, but the Spurs played it right and gave him rest where he needs it. To the owner not paying attention, he might seem inconsistent and not very good. There isn’t much time to strike as I expect the stat line to only improve from here. I’d offer a guy like Ariza here, someone you could really use to offload. Another option would be Randy Foye.

As mentioned, I already inked a deal for Hibbert. Both Calderon and Harris are on the same team in my league and I know the guy is looking to deal. His keeper was Harris this year so I expect him to still be in love, so I’ll target Calderon before going after Manu. My low ball will be something like Iverson and Dunleavy (Indy plays tonight and Wednesday, fingers crossed for two good games from Dunleavy to up his value, I just grabbed him off the FA wire after the 2-1 trade for Biedrins).

One last thing, it might seem like I am giving contradictory advice on Randy Foye right now, suggesting people grab him and also offer him in trades. Randy is an awesome commodity right now because you just don’t know what you’re gonna get. The potential is high enough to warrant a pick up, no doubt, but if I can ink one of the (more sure) guys above with him in a deal, well then take it and run!

  1. So what should I do about Randy Foye after all? Should I drop Sheed (who I only picked up last night) so that I can grab Foye, before some other manager in my league realizes his potential at last and beats me to him?

Or should I keep Sheed for a little longer, hoping that KG's knee troubles might turn out to be more serious that it's thought?

  2. thief can u check my question at bottom of last post? thanx!
Also which is enough for haris, ben gordon nene or lou williams or are they too much?

    ReplyDelete
  3. @Christo: Foye is actually still sitting out on the FA block?

@ Thief: Great article! I love the potential that Biedrins can bring to our squads. Should I look to grab Ginobili as well with Ariza? I know you said limit yourself to just 1 or 2 of these buy low candidates.

    My Sauce:

    Over:
    FT% .254(Green)
    PPG .120
    3PG .025

    Under:
    FG% -.192
    RPG -.068
    APG -.207
    SPG -.347(red)
    BPG -.008

I'm starting to become a well-rounded squad. In addition, I am trying to grab Kev Martin as well from the Ginobili owner.(His Kev Martin=Frye+Jason Terry) Which trade should I be focused on right now?

    Thanks!

  4. Christo, tough call. Foye is all potential here, but Sheed is the better player. I'd hold him and wait for more news on KG.

McG, thanks for the link! I've been busy on the new trade analyzer but I'll give it a spin tonight. Appreciate the help! I'd hold here with your squad, don't ruin a good thing!

Dan, I'd offer Ben for Harris and toss Lou into the other deal. Ink em!!

Q, love u snagging Manu for Ariza. Hook it up.

  5. @Qwan
    Yes, he is...LOL

I should have grabbed him a long time ago, but I only have one roster spot to work with. At first I went for M.Miller and now, since Miller aggravated his injury, I am hesitant about Sheed and the KG situation. I am eager to hear some more news about KG's knee, especially since Mr Thief is there and should be the first to know if there's anything new and tell it to us...

  8. Woozy i think rondo is best player in that trade and he is more valuable than that.

  9. oh yea also offering lou will and nene for manu and gallinari, what do you think of that? I have oh so many questions lol

    ReplyDelete
  10. @Danshaff
i love rondo but my team is now on a 9 week losing streak so gotta shake up my team. this trade is a huge risk i agree but if calderon and vc can turn it around, it make be a good deal

    ReplyDelete
  11. @Christo: I guess we gotta hold and wait for P. Gasol to make an appearance too. How is your squad hanging with Gasol's bench time. I would sure love to reap the benefit of his solid statline's

    ReplyDelete
  12. Hey Thief. Who do you take in order with KG, Brand and Beidrins? Personally I would rank them in just that order. Beidrins was grabbed off the wire a few weeks ago but I know the owner would be willing to deal him. Especially for my Brand but I personally don't like that deal. I drafted Beidrins but cut bait early his early injuries/struggles.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Hey Thief,

Could I offer Derrick Rose and Big Z for both Ginobili and Beidrins?

    Thanks! Love your advice!

    I was offered this trade:
My P. Gasol, R. Lewis, M. Will and R. Foye
For His D. Wade, J. Rich, Yi Jianlian, J. Thompson

    What should I do? Thanks

  15. @Qwan

LOL, I have no problem with bench time at all. In fact, I need more bench time - it's a roto league and I have constantly rotated my players into the 10 starting spots, so I have too many games played, compared to most of the other managers (the limit is 82 games for each spot)... I very rarely bench anyone, cause they seem to play their best games exactly when I bench them and piss me off - for example, Brandon Jennings's only game with more than 40% FG over the entire last month (a 9 for 18 performance) came on a night, when he was sitting on my bench...LOL

BTW, let's stop using Thief's comment pages for our own conversations :P If you have Skype for chatting, you could add me and drop me a line there from time to time - my ID is "christomir".

  17. One more question, some guy offered me Calderon for Rose straight up, what do you think?

    ReplyDelete
  18. Thief -

The team that has Manu in my league has both him and Amare on the block...what do you think of offering J Smoov, Foye and Tyrus for them? Thanks for your help!

  19. po, i'm not the thief, but i'm willing to bet he'd call that straight thievery. as long as you've got some reasonable talent on your WW, make the offer!

  20. Hey thief, who do you think holds longer-term value: douglas-roberts or rafer alston?

  21. REdd id done everyone who has him needs to drop he tore his mcl and acl!!

  22. Hey Thief,

Should I try and deal Kaman for Biedriens and someone else? Or would I be giving up too much?

    ReplyDelete
  23. I was thinking of sending Kaman & Foye for Biedriens & Rose. Thoughts?

    ReplyDelete
  24. Yes, it is now confirmed that Michael Redd is out for the season! I hope Senn didn't miss out on picking up Sammy D or Wilson Chandler, while waiting for the news about Redd to come out. :)

    ReplyDelete
  25. michael, i think you'd be giving up way too much. but feel free to wait for the thief to chime in, i've been wrong before!

    ReplyDelete
  26. shit man i got jose, harris AND biedrins on my squad...and im strugglin'

    ReplyDelete
  27. Yo Thief! Is this the right time to make a move for Jennings for the low before unsuspecting Owners catch wind of this Redd news? Or is that Rookie Effect still in play for the young man?

    ReplyDelete
  28. On second thought, I'd rather pass on Jennings I already have Ariza messing up my FG%. Jennings isnt in a slump he is just jacking up any shot he can get his hands on. I'd rather not even buy low on the kid right now.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Thief. You will proud of me when you see the deal I am going to dish to this guy. Not only did this manager lose Arenas, but he is also holding Anthony Randolph as well lol. Peep this deal My Ariza+Thompson+Foye for his Kev Martin+ Manu. Let me know if that is theivin or just even steven?

    Thanks again!

    ReplyDelete
  30. Qwan, I don't know what Mr Thief is going to say, but I am starting to think Jennings actually IS a buy low right now, rather than a sell high... The "sell high" rating by the Analyzer is mainly due to his overall numbers for the season, which still don't look that bad. But most Jennings fantasy owners (including me!) follow the NBA and their own fantasy team regularly enough, so they don't look at the overall numbers. They know how he has been abusing the game of basketball throughout December and especially early January, so they are not only frustrated - they are PISSED OFF with him big time and DYING to sell him!

Something tells me that however stupid this kid is (and, yes, I he is obviously quite stupid, although he does love basketball and wants to succeed), he can't possibly get any worse than that. So now, or some time in the near future, if he could just find at least half of his early season form, he will be quite useful for the price you can grab him at - some people are even thinking of letting him go to waiver wire!

I just canceled my trade offer for Devin Harris, in which I was giving up Jennings, cause after his atrocious performance last night in LA no one could possibly give up for him even a player like Harris, who is struggling himself.

I'll just hold on to Jennings and hope for the best, won't go into the trap of selling low.

  31. hey thief just wondering when the updated team analyzer will be coming out?

    ReplyDelete
  32. Christo

I just dealt Jennings for Jameer Nelson, who I think with Carter out and coming back from injury is going to have a much better 2nd half than Jennings...deal him dude!

  34. Quick questions, out of the top of your head...

    1. Danilo or Okur?

    2. Tyrus or Biedrins?

    ReplyDelete
  35. danilo over okur
    biedrins over tyrus

  36. just offered c. lee for jennings.
i've got 3 offers up right now:

    GIVE: gay GET: granger
    GIVE: hamilton GET: griffin
    GIVE: c. lee GET: jennings

hope all three get accepted! thinking none will though...

    ReplyDelete
  37. Alright gents, just got in the door, I'm gonna hammer down some grub, then get the updated analyzer out to you. Once I get that far, I'll try and hit up some answers. BUSY DAY!!

    ReplyDelete
  38. Ben, she's a dream for sure!

Ismael, I agree with Ben, though Okur and Danillo is close.

Christo, see why I discount stupid rookies. For every Tyreke I miss out on, there's a Jennings that kills you.

    Mike, I like that deal.

All, WOW Redd is done, what a shocker! LOL, saw this comin a mile and a half away. I'll do some diggin and see who the add is, someone has to step up on Mil.

Span, this season = rafer. Next season = CDR.

Ballin, try takin Mo WIll out of the deal, toss in someone you don't want too much.

If I miss your question, I'm sorry, post it again under the new post!

    ReplyDelete
  39. hey thief,

i jus inked this trade.. what you think

my rondo + jflynn for his d.howard and Big Z. what ya think. i mean we have 3 keepers in this league and d howard and d wade will be 2 of mines and ima bouta get cp3. you think i did the right move. ima drop big z and grab probably conley. 16 team roto, 14 deep bench (so theres NO FA at all) and CATS: fgm, fg%, ftm, ft%, 3ptm, 3pt%, rebs, ast, steals, blks, ast/turnover ratio.

    ReplyDelete
  40. @ po

LOL! I can see why you wanted to sell him. As I said in my previous post, I feel the same right now - I hate him.

But you were probably just lucky you had a stupid manager in your league, who wasn't following what the players do and was only looking at Brandon's overall stats for the season; so you were able to sell him incredibly high.

But in my league there are no idiots and no one would be willing to even give a piece of crap for him at the moment, so I am better off stashing him (maybe only playing him versus teams that don't play defense, like Warriors, Suns, Sixers, Wizards, Raptors, etc.) and hoping he will get better. And I think he will get much beter. As I said, he couldn't possibly get any worse...

    ReplyDelete
  41. Hey Thief, who should i drop for Biedrins?

    I have
    Chris Duhon
    Richard Hamilton
    Devin Harris
    J.r smith
    marcus camby
    peja stojakavic
    chris kaman
    samuel dalembert
    Dwade
    david west
    brandon roy
    brendan haywood
    blake griffin

    Thanks a lot!

  42. Hey thief,

I also have Carmelo should I try and make a deal for G.Wallace or Josh Smith? Do you think Carmelo is in their tier now?

    ReplyDelete
  43. Thief-

I just offered J Smoove, Foye, and Tyrus for Manu and Amare and got rejected. Who could I add to the deal? He said that he is interested in Smith, but not the other two. My roster:

    Rondo
    Felton
    Bibby
    Nelson
    Foye
    Redick
    J Johnson
    Love
    J Smith
    T Thomas
    Okafor
    Biedrins
    Hinrich

    ReplyDelete
  44. Wow, I just used the new analyzer and it says that I should trade Carmelo and Kaman for Paul and I would still be thieving!!!!! Wow, I knew Paul was good but not that good...amazing!

My league would probably veto it because they would think that I was getting screwed!

    ReplyDelete
  45. Hey Thief, the new analyzer is off da chain! Had a few questions. A. Randolph is going to be out 3-6 weeks. Should I hold onto him? I just read that there are talks to send Bynum to Toronto for Bosh. I was going to try and sell Bnyum high after his huge double double last night, but with this new piece of information, should I hold off? If he were to go to Toronto, he would get uber playing time, no? Also, about the GWall trade. I am all set to go through with it this wed. with the most likely scenario being BD/Butler for GWall/J-Rich. However, this week I am currently matched up against the leader in my league. Last week I played the person who was in 2nd and I whooped him 10-0(I had a pretty decent week :), and now I am in 2nd place. Do you think I should hold off until this matchup is over to get a better idea of where I stand with the top dog, or should I just go ahead and pull the trigger? Thanks for any help.

  46. How about Mike Miller?
Can I trust him when he return
I love his AST and FG%
