9 Tips to Blogging Etiquette for the Newbie
By Vickie J. Scanlon
You’ve got a blog, but are you conducting yourself properly with your fellow bloggers? If this thought has crossed your mind as you were typing a comment, or creating a post-you’re on the right track. Below are some blogging etiquette rules that if followed, can help you in your blogging journey and keep you from damaging your reputation online.
1. Self-promotion with no comment relevant to the post in question disrupts the flow of the post and will be deleted. How best to promote your blog is through a well thought out comment that is relevant to the post. Leave a link within your name or signature.
a. Do not say "Visit My Blog" or “Please link to me”. If someone left a message of this nature on your own site, more than likely you would be offended and would delete it. Other bloggers are no different. People have to have reasons to link to another site.
b. Do not stick an advertisement in your comment. How annoying. It's gone in my book.
2. Hateful commenting-Though you may think it is necessary, the blog owner will probably delete it if the comment is not relevant to the post, or if he or she feels it is offensive to their readers. Yes, you can disagree, but do it in a constructive and respectful manner. Remember, people like controversy-they are turned off by rudeness.
3. If you mention a post or a quote from another blog, be sure to put a link back to their site so others can enjoy what you have read.
4. Images- Always identify where you got the image if you put images on your blog.
5. Do not link to an image from another site. You are stealing bandwidth from that person.
6. If you’re going to be using someone else’s content get their permission. If permission is granted be sure to include the author’s name with a link back to their site.
7. If it is from a free article directory, be sure to include the resource box with hyperlinks hot. If you ignore these rules, you are in fact stealing their content (which is a no-no) and it is called “copyright infringement”.
8. Remember that the words you write are a permanent record. Get in the mindset that the whole world may be seeing what you are writing- that could be your boss, your future employer or a friend. Rule of thumb: Think before you hit those keys on the keyboard.
9. Reputation - To build trust make sure that the information you give your readers is as accurate as possible. Do your research. If the information you are giving is opinion-state it as such.
To conclude, with more and more people coming onboard the blogging train, it’s nice to know that yes, etiquette in the blogging world does matter.
