iPhone Comes to China Without Wi-Fi

The iPhone arrives in China today amid speculation that a missing feature could seriously hamper sales, according to an Associated Press report.

China Unicom starts selling iPhones Friday night at 2,000 stores reaching across the nation. It hopes to gain an edge against China Mobile, the world's biggest phone company by subscribers.

Unfortunately, China Unicom's iPhone is priced high and lacks an important feature, Wi-Fi.

"There's going to be a perception that the phone they have is dumbed down from the one that somebody has in California," said Duncan Clark, chairman of BDA China Ltd., a Beijing-based technology research firm. "We've seen before that Chinese consumers don't like to be treated like second-class citizens."

The retail price ranges from 4,999 yuan ($730) to 6,999 yuan ($1,025) for the 32GB iPhone 3GS. This is well above the $835 price charged for a Wi-Fi enabled 3GS on the black market.

Unicom's iPhones lack WiFi because it was banned by Beijing who is trying to push their own WAPI standard. The ban was lifted in May after iPhone manufacturing had already begun, meaning its likely that future iPhones will have Wi-Fi enabled.

A Unicom spokesman, Yi Difei, confirmed this saying, "We are talking with Apple and expect the problem to be solved by the end of this year."

The real question is who will purchase an iPhone from China Unicom considering a Wi-Fi enabled version is coming within months and a cheaper, unlocked, Wi-Fi enabled phone can be easily purchased from street vendors.

Twitter Warns of New Phishing Scam

Twitter is warning users of a new phishing scam spreading through direct messages on the network, which redirect users to a fake log-in page to steal their passwords.

Through its Spam Watch account, Twitter warned: "We've seen a few phishing attempts today (Wednesday); if you've received a strange (direct message), and it takes you to a Twitter log-in page, don't do it!"

The phishing direct messages take the form of: "hi. this you on here? http://blogger.djh****.com" (Part of the hyperlink removed for security). The site that this hyperlink redirects recipients to is designed to grab your Twitter username and password as soon as they are entered.

After one's Twitter login credentials are entered into the phishing site, the page redirects to a fake "Twitter over capacity page," with the famous Twitter Fail Whale. This is not a genuine Twitter page.

Security firm Sophos advises users that fell for the phishing scam to immediately change their Twitter passwords and also any other sites where the same log-in credentials are used.

Sophos say on their blog that "hackers like to comandeer poorly protected PCs to form a botnet from which they can send spam campaigns or spread malware, and in the same way they are after compromised social networking accounts."

As long as you do not click on the link from this direct message, you should be safe from the phishing attack. It is recommended that you delete any similar messages as soon as you receive them.

Google has announced Maps Navigation, its own free navigation app for mobile devices.

The application is currently in beta and only for the Android platform; however, its likely that an iPhone version won't be far behind.

Google Maps Navigation was built from the ground up to take advantage of your phone's Internet connection. It features 3D views, turn-by-turn voice guidance and automatic rerouting.

Now Google has enabled users to keep their existing phone numbers and get (most of) the features Google Voice offers, including Google's excellent voicemail service.

When you sign up for Google Voice -- which is still not widely available to the public (you need to get an invite or request one) -- you can either choose Google one-stop phone number or keep your own for a more pared-down experience. Keeping your old digits gives you:
