New Details About the Apple Tablet?

New details about the much rumored Apple Tablet have been posted online by iLounge. This information comes from a source who as been reliable for the site in the past.

Their source reveals that Apple has created at least three prototypes for the tablet. The first prototype was created with a 7" screen but it was considered too small. The latest version is using a 10.7" screen.

The tablet is said to run iPhone OS and be very similar in design to the iPhone, complete with a curved back.

It will be sold in two different variations. One with 3G and one without.

The screen resolution is expected to be 720p or thereabouts and the device will have 7 times the touchable surface area. It's designed to expand on the media capabilities of the iPhone as a slate-like replacement for books and magazines, plus all of the media, gaming, app, and web functionality.

The iLounge source says the tablet is not meant to compete with netbooks. It’s an iPhone OS media player and light communication device.

Apple's current plan is to announce it on or before January 19, 2010, and build media hype until it starts selling in May or June. All that is required is the go ahead from Steve Jobs.

Apparently the chances of it appearing in the market are at about 80%.

Apple Rehires Newton Tablet Developer

Apple has rehired Newton Tablet developer Michael Tchao after an absence of 15 years. Tchao was one of the original developers of the failed Newton personal assistant.

According to The New York Times, Tchao joins Apple as vice president of product marketing. He will report to Phil Schiller, a senior vice president.

Most recently he served as the general manager of Nike Techlab, designing armbands and sneakers that integrate with the iPod.

Its not clear what Tchao's duties at Apple will entail.

The story thus far: GelaSkins for iPod, good, GelaSkins for 2G iPhone, not so good. Problems with the magical adhesive technology imbued with original art for the original iPhone were twofold. First, the surface of the GelaSkin ended well before reaching the silver bezel of the iPhone, and, second, you had to pay extra for a screen protector. Well, GelaSkins for the iPhone 3G are out, and there are new problems, but not from the GelaSkins. Apple's redesign of the iPhone, including hairline cracks and a surface that collects fingerprints like a CSI hobbyist, have made Gelaskins worthy of reconsideration.

Peeking under leafs and Underworld

To me, GelaSkins are a kind of real-world corollary to Clarke's Third Law, that being: any sufficiently advanced personal technology is indistinguishable from pornography. I lust after the futuristic vinyl surface, which is smooth yet grippy on top, sticky yet not sticky on the bottom. While GelaSkins will readily adhere to the iPhone, there is no adhesive residue. Further, GelaSkins can be removed and placed back on the packing surface they ship with for reuse later—though this is not an advertised feature. My personal experience is that it works, allowing for the use of multiple GelaSkins, and there are many multiples to choose from. As of this review, there are 117 GelaSkins available for the iPhone 3G. I really like the work of Colin Thompson, while my wife prefers anything that is frilly and non-serious—where is the edge in that? Still, her first choice goes well with her white iPhone. Black and white surfaces are an aesthetic improvement by Apple, while GelaSkins has made their own improvement in design.

More skin is always better

Addressing one of my biggest complaints, surface coverage now extends along the sides to the silver bezel of the iPhone 3G. Besides offering more protection, that extra half an inch enhances the overall look. It's much more of a skin, and less of a sticker now.

Matching skin with iPhone color matters

No matter how hard I tried, I could not get a perfect fit. On my iPhone, I only have wrinkles at the bottom, but on my wife's, they are on both the top and bottom. I assumed the wrinkles were a matter of inevitability, wrapping the GelaSkin over a curved surface. However, in writing to the company, they sent me a photo of a perfectly skinned iPhone. It seems that I stretched each GelaSkin when applying it. To be fair, the wrinkles aren't really visible and don't cause any harm. As I keep my iPhone in my pocket, I was worried that lint might get between the iPhone and GelaSkin, eventually causing peeling. This has not been an issue, and the GelaSkin continues to protect my iPhone and make me feel superior to everyone with a bulky case or, worse, a naked iPhone smeared with their DNA—ick. Regarding the filthy latter issue, GelaScreens are offered to protect the iPhone screen. I found GelaScreens to be much improved over the screens sold at retail Apple Stores, which are a bit too opaque for my tastes. In contrast, GelaScreens are like touching the glass surface of the iPhone, with all that implies, reflective glare and smudges—ick. Still, you would have that without any protection, so why not have GelaScreens?

At least wallpapers are free, even if you don't use GelaSkins

GelaScreens are not included with GelaSkins for the iPhone 3G; a two-pack sells for $12.95. You can also get GelaScreens for $7.75 with the purchase of a GelaSkin for $14.95, but that's not all you have to spend. Because the company is located in the mythical land of Wayne Gretzky and universal healthcare (Canada), shipping to the US is at least $3.95, or $7.95 if you want to avoid Standard Post like the plague and use UPS. That's $30.65, or about one month of egregious data plan pricing from AT&T. There is also a buy-three-get-one-free option, but either way GelaSkins are not free, except for the wallpaper.

Nonetheless, the improvement in design, coupled with Apple introducing black and white models that complement in color, have me feeling pretty good about having disposed of my income with GelaSkins. For those who want protection from scratches and a little fine art on your iPhone, GelaSkins for the iPhone 3G make for a compelling case without the bulk of a traditional case.

More details about the new Apple iMac, Mouse, and Remote have been posted online by Mac4Ever.

Google search snippets : Jump to Link you want Now

The Google Blog announced two new features within the Google search results we have spotted earlier. The first are the anchor based links and the second are the snippet based links. Google Testing Enhanced Listings, “Pagelinks” article from back in December 2008, told us this was coming as well. Here are pictures of both, that clearly describe each:

Both these types of links take you to the same page of the main link, but they anchor you down or jump you to a specific point on the page. This is done using anchor links within the page source. The Google Webmaster Central Blog explains how webmasters can help gain these links in their snippets. Google explains:

First, ensure that long, multi-topic pages on your site are well-structured and broken into distinct logical sections. Second, ensure that each section has an associated anchor with a descriptive name (i.e., not just “Section 2.1″), and that your page includes a “table of contents” which links to the individual anchors. The new in-snippet links only appear for relevant queries, so you won’t see it on the results all the time — only when we think that a link to a section would be highly useful for a particular query.

Apple to Release New iMac This Month?

Apple may offer a redesigned family of iMacs as early as this month, reveals AppleInsider.

The new iMac is expected to sport classier enclosures and add a few bells and whistles.

The new all-in-one, dual-core desktops were finalized earlier in September and have been rolling off the Mac maker's Taiwanese product lines for roughly two weeks, according to two people familiar with the matter.

In addition to more affordable pricing, the systems are expected to come clad in a thinner industrial design, one of those people added.

It's possible that the new iMac will get an optional Blu-ray drive and a pair of other associated enhancements -- one believed to be related to audio.

AppleInsider believes the new systems will be announces between next week and mid October.

Like all electric bikes, the Gocylce promises a sweat-free ride to work. But unlike every other we've seen, this one actually looks cool – and it's also quite affordable, if bought over 12 months through the Gocycle to Work scheme. Has the electric bike finally come of age?

Looks and design
The saddle moves further back as you raise it, making more room for tall users, and the bars can be adjusted for reach as well as height, which has the side-effect of tweaking the handling.

The frame is made from super-lightweight, injection-moulded magnesium alloy, which helps to keep the weight down to a respectable 16kg – much less than most electric bikes, but still a bit more than your average leg-powered machine.

The wheels are quick-release and the Gocycle can be folded down for storage – in an optional case or bag – but this isn't a folding bike like a Brompton, it's meant to be ridden.

Features and build
The Gocycle has a 1in-travel rear shock absorber, which should be just enough to take the sting out of potholes. It also provides a convenient mounting point for a bespoke cable lock – this isn't chunky enough to offer much long-term security, but some U-locks will also fit.

The drivetrain is fully enclosed, so your strides won't get caught on the chainring or messed up by oil and the grime is kept away from the transmission.

The rear hub has a three-speed (yep, count 'em) gearbox, operated by a twist-grip shifter.

Go electric!
Push the bar-mounted "boost" button and a 250W hub-mounted motor drives the front wheel via a tiny ceramic clutch.

On battery power alone, the Gocyle will top out at 15mph – the most allowed in the UK for an electric vehicle without needing a licence. The mechanical disc brakes give swift stopping power.

The Gocycle is powered by a 9Ah NiMH battery pack, which slots neatly inside the frame. It's good for a range of between 8 and 20 miles, depending on how lazy you feel. Recharging takes 3.5 hours from a normal mains socket.

Ride-wise, it's comfortable and when on boost, the Gocycle's weight and build makes it feel positively nippy compared to other leccy cycles on the market. We'd like to see more gear options, but when you have a boost button, who cares, right?

In all, this is an electric bike that won't make you feel like an utter dork on your daily cycle – the perfect commuting steed for the perspiration-phobe.

According to Gizmodo the phones are going to be made by Sharp who will share branding with Microsoft.

iPhone Home Screen Redesign [Concept]

Geoff Teehan from Teehan+Lax has posted his vision for the iPhone Home Screen. Unfortunately, Apple has prevented any changes to the home screen via the SDK; however, its possible that someone could create an implementation of this for users with jailbroken devices.

You can see from the screens it’s essentially just a scrollable list of applications and notifications. We envision it behaving in much the same way that the list view does in the Calendar application. By default it may track things like missed calls, unread emails and calendar events. But what if users could allow other apps to feed into this screen as well? If I’m a Facebook junkie I’d be able to tell the Facebook app to include certain feeds on my home screen. If I was a frequent traveler I may include the Tripit app to show me my upcoming trips. The options would only be limited by what apps you have installed.

Basically the design allows you to create a scrollable home screen of the stuff that matters to you.
