Kill Pill Allows AT&T to Disable Subsidized Netbooks

A new feature called a 'kill pill' will allow wireless carriers to disable subsidized netbooks if customers haven't paid their bill, according to an Excite News report.

LM Ericsson AB, the Swedish company that makes many of the modems that go into laptops, announced Tuesday that its new modem will deal with this issue by including a feature that's virtually a wireless repo man. If the carrier has the stomach to do so, it can send a signal that completely disables the computer, making it impossible to turn on.

"We call it a 'kill pill,'" said Mats Norin, Ericsson's vice president of mobile broadband modules.

The module is said to work on AT&T's network and many other 3G networks.

LM Ericsson modem says the modem can also remain active while a computer is off. This would allow it to listen for wireless messages and wake up the computer when an important email or call is received.

Six New Phones from AT&T

Just days before CTIA kicks off in Las Vegas, AT&T announced its attractive spring lineup of handsets on Monday. The carrier is focused on bringing texting and e-mail capabilities to everyone, whether they're a teenager or a business executive. And while messaging phones can run a bit on the boring side, the new lineup has some enticing choices. Here are a few that caught my eye:

Nokia E71x

Last fall when I reviewed the unlocked E71, I was blown away at its svelte 0.4-inch profile and sophisticated design. In fact, my biggest gripe about the E71 was its hefty unlocked price. And when I heard that it would be available this spring at a subsidized price, I figured it would still be fairly expensive. Not so: The E71x will be coming to customers within a few weeks at the amazingly reasonable price of $100. The E71x has a black steel finish (as opposed to the unlocked's silver finish), comes with 3G and Wi-Fi connectivity, a 3.2 megapixel camera, integrated A-GPS and runs Symbian S60 platform.

Samsung Impression

With the first commercially available AMOLED (active-matrix organic light-emitting diode) screen, the Samsung Impression promises an extraordinarily bright and clear display. And you can fully take advantage of the Impression's generous 3.2-inch screen, as it comes with a full Web browser. The Impression also touts an accelerometer, assisted GPS and a full slide-out QWERTY keyboard. I am a little disappointed, however, that the camera specs weren't beefed up a bit. A 3-megapixel camera is fine, but wouldn't it be nice to view higher quality photos on this fantastic display? Nonetheless, I am really looking forward to checking out the Impression. The Impression will be available on April 7 for $200 with a two-year contract.

LG Xenon

The LG Xenon is a nice option for someone looking for a touchscreen/QWERTY keyboard combination, but not necessarily a smartphone. The Xenon has some modest, but respectable specs: A 2-megapixel camera, GPS integration, Bluetooth 2.0 and Wi-Fi connectivity. The UI is rumored to be similar to Samsung's TouchWiz interface and the widget-based interfaced seen on the LG Prada II. The Prada II's UI has seven widgets (an analog clock, a calendar, an FM radio, a music player, a world clock, notes, and image slideshow) that you can move around and arrange to your liking. If the Xenon's UI is anything like the LG Prada II's, customers will be pleased at its ease-of-use and touch-friendliness. The Xenon will be available on April 8 in black, blue and red for $100 with a two-year contract.

Samsung Propel Pro

The Samsung Propel Pro has the same design as its predecessor, the non-smartphone Propel, but has a bevy of upgrades. Powered by Windows Mobile 6.1, the Propel Pro sports a slide-out full-QWERTY keyboard, Wi-Fi connectivity, a 3-megapixel camera, an optical joystick and expandable memory up to 32 GB. It isn't the slickest device, but it has a nice balance of business and entertainment features. And it's affordable: The Propel Pro is available in April for $150 with a two-year agreement.

Other new phones from AT&T include the LG Neon, an affordable touchscreen slider, and the Samsung Magnet, a messaging phone aimed at teens. Check back for more CTIA coverage this week including more in-depth analysis and impressions of these phones and more.

How To Find A Reputable Affiliate Program That Works

One of the main reasons affiliate programs and money making systems don’t work is they fail to teach you anything about online marketing. Basically they give you a back office with your account information and they give you a couple of splash pages and links then they say here go make some money. Their home page is always filled full of hype and promises of millions if you only refer 5 people and they refer 5 and so on. The problem with this kind of marketing is once all the people who have huge list to promote to have joined, all your left with at the bottom is people who know nothing about online marketing. A few people make a ton of money and the masses are left holding the bag, and then these few people start another sure fire money making system and the process repeats itself.


Not sure you believe me, just think about all the affiliate programs and money making systems you have been hit with and how fast 90 percent of them have just disappeared? If you don’t already have a huge email list to market too, you are wasting your time with these types of money making systems, I don’t care what the sales pitch is, usually the more they tell you how fast you are going to make money and the millions that are going to come in because this is the best program you will find the more worthless the affiliate program is! It will be a short lived hype that will fade like the wind. These affiliate programs and money making systems are not outright scams, they work just like they say but only for a few and only for a while, they just don’t tell you that. Why do you think that the big gurus with the huge list always are signed up first, they are the only ones who can create the initial momentum for it to work for a while.


In trying to make money with affiliate programs and money making systems, I stay away from businesses where their main compensation is based on referring others, I want a real company that has real products, a reputable affiliate program and promotes heavily the resources they have available to you as a affiliate marketer. I don’t want to see on their home page promises of riches overnight and how this is the easiest program on the internet, some of these money making systems actually title their sites with names like easy affiliate cash, arm chair millionaire, lazy mans wealth. Notice it says (making ANY amount of money requires specialized knowledge). Does this disclaimer make any sense to you, it dosnt to me? I have learned to stay far away from companies that promote this way.


Some other methods these so called affiliate programs and money making systems use to promote with is a clock on their site with deadlines or how many people you can get in ahead of, my motto is if the company is good today to join, it should still be good next week to join, right? They also use the word secret a lot, secret system, secret product, secret marketing plan. I have news for any of you looking around for a reputable affiliate program their is no secret anything only proven marketing methods that work and a honest affiliate program will not make claims of any secret anything. Their are many things to look for when trying to find a reputable affiliate program or money making system, learn to spot the differences so you don’t waste your time and money trying to promote some garbage program that will only work for a few people.

LG's GD900 with (multi-touch?) transparent keypad gets S-Class UI

The recent glut of telephony news can mean only one thing: CTIA Wireless 2009 is getting ready to kick off in Vegas baby, Las Vegas. In the runup we have LG upping the hype on its 13.4mm-thick GD900 handset first outed in Barcelona at February's MWC show. This time, however, the 7.2Mbps HSDPA slider with world's first transparent glass (not plastic as originally assumed) keypad will be functional, running LG's new S-Class UI on the 3-inch display. We know that the GD900 features vibrational haptic feedback and that the transparent keypad seems to double as a touch-sensitive mouse pad (like that on your laptop) when surfing the internet or navigating the UI -- it also seems to support gestures like writing "M" to launch the MP3 music player and multi-touch such as pinch to zoom on photographs. The GD900 will launch in Europe and Asia sometime in May. No US release announced so we'll have to make the most of our time with it this week in order to clear up all the mysteries presented by the Korean press release. Microsoft Hits Apple Where it Hurts

Video: Laptop Hunters $1000 – Lauren Gets an HP Pavilion

Faster than you can say Red State vs. Blue State, Microsoft's latest ad has set off a class war between Windows and Mac fanboys. If you haven't seen the ad, basically, shopper Lauren tries to find a laptop under $1000 and ends up getting a Windows machine.

I remember reading earlier this year a comment by Ed Oswald on Technologizer that said Microsoft fans were "much more metered in their support" compared to Apple fans. Oh, how times change! In the past, Windows boys have let Microsoft do all their public dissing for them, taking shots at the Apple Tax, shortcomings of the iPhone and even the Apple logo. But since Microsoft pulled out the long knives with its latest commercial spot, warriors of both stripes are reaching out from their basement caves for an epic Windows vs. Apple battle.

"Only the Apple people... can be called 'fanboys,'" a commenter named Lonewaffle said on PC World. "Whereas all 'PC' people are just reasonable and more intelligent." The conversation continued in much the same way, with most cracks going after Apple-when they weren't being directed at the author that is.

As the battle waged it seemed we were doomed to witness further carnage. But then a glimmer of hope named YukonJack stepped in to calm the warring tribes, "This is an age old battle between "styles" in the old days before computers: there was and [probably] still is a battle going on somewhere between a Harley-Davidson owner and an Indian owner." Ah, yes, tell us, Yukon Jack, how this is such a silly argument with a sentimental anecdote from the annals of Americana: "The difference between them was the Indian owner had actually gone to school. Does this sound familiar?" Turns out YukonJack is a Windows man.

PC World wasn't the only place that fights broke out. Over at Gizmodo the Apple fans were defending their honor against Microsoft's attack. Even poor, perky Lauren became a target in this bloody battle of words. "I don't care if that broke b*tch can't afford a Mac," said pettiblay. "I would love to see a study where you give a couple people 2500$ and see which laptop they buy."

On Crunch Gear, IHateMyIphone said, "most mac users only went with an apple because some over paid actor pop up on their tv with a cool shirt on and started bashing vista."

Of course it wasn't only the commenting crowd that was getting in on the action. Over at Microsoft Watch, Joe Wilcox said, "Oh, baby, this is exactly the kind of marketing Microsoft should be doing now. The emphasis is value, with Apple taking blows from Microsoft. Ouch." Apple Insider, on the other hand, went after Microsoft with the price vs. value argument. Can you guess what its conclusion was?

We can expect more of these ads, as advertising dollars are flowing right now to get Lauren and her fellow shoppers in front of the March Madness audience. So with no end in sight, and since no one else is willing to be the voice of reason, let me bring some sanity to this process. Buy whichever system you like. Just make sure it meets your needs and you're getting good value for your money.

RiP Dev Announces Lightweight Alternative to Cydia

RiP Dev has announced Icy, a lightweight alternative to Cydia for installing jailbroken iPhone applications. The installer is compatible with existing Cydia repositories and will remain free.

In the process of working on InstallerApp, we have extensively investigated how the technology behind Cydia works. Essentially, Cydia is a front-end to two open source technologies - APT and DPKG. DPKG is a system that installs and removes specially prepared packages (.deb files). APT allows these files to be organized in network "repositories" to be indexed and downloaded. Due to the highly unoptimal build of DPKG (as Jay Freeman, the author of Cydia, admits it in his article about Cydia) we had to compile DPKG and the tools needed from scratch. As a result, the same set of tools take only a little over than 1 megabyte as opposed to 32 installed by Cydia.

While testing Cydia support for InstallerApp, we of course had to use Jay's creation a lot. And unfortunately it felt slow, and overloaded. We thought, well, why not make our own front-end to DPKG? It would be compatible with Cydia, but be focused on speed, elegance and be very, very thin. So one of our programmers sat down and made up in a week a new alternative installer that we are proud to reveal to you today, named Icy.

IcyIcy 1.0 is pretty simple, and we plan on keeping it that way. It will only refresh repositories when you tell it to, and will not scroll pages of cool looking terminal text when installing or removing a package. Instead, it presents the installation process in a friendly and cool manner - enhanced with crisp black and white interface featuring icons by quite famous artist Max Rudberg. Icy uses the same DPKG that Cydia does, but without APT that handles downloading of repository indeces and packages - we chose to use a combination of libcurl and sqlite for that.



Icy only downloads headers when refreshing repositories, so it won't download again the indeces that were not changed - this saves on your traffic and makes the refreshes faster. It will pick up existing Cydia repositories and also will allow you to add more through its Add Source interface.

When we saw that Apple is moving towards supporting landscape mode more in the upcoming 3.0 firmware, we thought - hey, landscape is useful when browsing, too! So Icy supports landscape as well.

Icy will always remain free. Despite what some people may think, we are not blind and we see what tremendious job Jay (saurik) Freeman and community source repository owners (such as The Big Boss, Fabiano Confuorto and others) have done over the past year - and this is our way to say "thank you" to them. We hope you will enjoy the "new kid on the block" - and we have extensive plans on enhancing it in the future versions - for example, 1.1 will have, among other things, a dependency graph for the packages.

This being said, we will be slowly phasing out support of Installer 4 in favor of Icy and soon-to-be-announced Installer 5. Since we're a commercial entity with over 10 people in staff, we have the dedication and resources to make sure Icy and Installer exist and grow peacefully together with Cydia.

iPhone 'Most Useful' Smartphone?

Ninety-three percent of UK iPhone owners accessed mobile media in January. According to comScore, mobile e-mail is used by 75 percent of British iPhone owners, making it the most popular type of mobile content consumed on the device.

iPhone users are often twice as likely as other smartphone users at using the following applications, according to the comScore iPhone report: accessing news/info via browser; e-mail; listening to mobile music; accessing news/info via downloaded application; social networking; accessing weather reports; using Web search.

"Consumers are clearly embracing the iPhone's touch screen keyboard," observed Alistair Hill, analyst, comScore.

"The penetration of e-mail usage on the iPhone is more than double that of the smartphone category as a whole. Over the past several quarters, the UK smartphone market has been dominated by the N95, which lacks a QWERTY keyboard. As a result, we see smartphone users favor using their device for music and photo messaging, two activities for which these Nokia devices are particularly well-suited, more than e-mail."

ComScore data show that nearly 80 percent of UK iPhone owners accessed news and other information via a browser, four times the rate for all mobile phone users.

The App Store is also extremely popular among iPhone owners, with 55.6 percent accessing news and information via a downloaded application, compared with 22.1 per cent of smartphone owners, and 6.3 per cent of all mobile phone users.

The iPhone has also provided a boost to the mobile games sector, with 37 percent of iPhone owners downloading a game and 18.6 percent purchasing one. Only 5.6 per cent of smartphone owners and 2.7 percent of mobile phone users purchased a game in January.

comScore also revealed today the demographics of iPhone owners, and found that 75 percent are males, mostly between the ages of 18-44. Smartphone ownership also typically skews male in the UK, with males comprising 65 percent of the audience.

"The iPhone is indeed an early adopter phenomenon in the United Kingdom," said Hill.

"While the device's ease of use is certainly contributing to the lift we see in mobile media consumption, the fact that the device requires a subscription package that includes an unlimited data plan is also a contributing factor. However, it is also important to note that while nearly all iPhone owners are consuming mobile media, the device is in the hands of only two percent of mobile phone users in the UK."

comScore data also shows that 55 percent of mobile media consumers are male, and 65 percent are between the ages of 18-44. 23 percent of mobile media users own a smartphone; and 3.5 percent, an iPhone.

Ways to Implement E-Business Solutions Successfully.

The productivity gains and savings guaranteed by e-business solutions are usually lost not thanks to the technology itself but due to improper management of their implementation. Apple WWDC Dates Announced: Rumors Abound

Apple announced June 8-12 as its date for this year's Worldwide Developers Conference at San Francisco's Moscone Center West. With the date confirmed, we turn towards the rumor mill surrounding what becomes the most anticipated date for Apple Fanboys in 2009 now that Apple decided to bow out of MacWorld. Apple says this year's WWDC will be all about the Mac OS X and the iPhone. But really, who knows what who or what will actually show up on stage? There are already piles of speculation and rumor out there, so let's dive in!

Return of the King?

Steve Jobs has been out of the public eye since he said he was taking time off for health reasons. At the time of his announcement, Jobs said he would be back in late June, but Apple loves surprises, so who knows? There's no doubt that a Jobs appearance at WWDC would invigorate the Apple-loving masses. However, Silicon Valley Insider's Dan Frommer wonders if Jobs will use WWDC to announce his retirement instead. Jobs has apparently stayed out of the loop in planning WWDC '09, or at least he hasn't interacted with Frommer's Apple contacts. It may also make sense for Jobs to ease his way out of Apple in stages since people identify him as the heart and soul of the company. In the end it's all guesswork, but it's worth considering as Apple looks to the future.

Quicktime overhaul

Quicktime is reportedly getting an under-the-hood overhaul, but its look may also change. Apple Insider supplied this mock up, which shows a new Quicktime with "virtual playback controls," presumably to maximize the screen space. Instead of the regular Quicktime window, the controls will appear as a clear glass panel when you mouse over the screen. This is similar to what happens in iTunes when you select full-screen mode.

Mac OS X: Snow Leopard

You may have also noticed from the Quicktime photo that the titlebar was a little darker than usual. That's because Quicktime's new look would be part of a Snow Leopard visual overhaul. When Apple announced Snow Leopard, it was billed as an under-the-hood upgrade to maximize dual core processors and improve overall performance. At the time, there were no announcements about a new look and feel.

However, rumors have been circulating recently that Apple has been working on a new user interface all along. Code-named "marble," some are describing the visual upgrade as "significant." The major change is that OS X may shed its platinum look for a darker chrome visual. Other user interface updates include iTunes-style scrollbars and menu bars with a darker background and lighter text.

The UI updates first started leaking through developers who got their hands on Snow Leopard test builds. Then it was reported that Apple stripped any new visuals out of the latest Snow Leopard test build to halt further leaks. Some are expecting Apple to unveil Snow Leopard at WWDC, and the new OS may even be available for sale this summer.

iPhone OS 3.0

There is, of course, the rumor that new hardware could be announced at WWDC, but speculation around this has dropped off recently. Instead many expect Apple to launch its push notification service announced earlier this month.

What's Next?

Now that WWDC has been officially announced, I'm sure it's only a matter of time before grainy images from China that are supposed to be the latest Mac gadget start popping up. Or perhaps a screenshot of Snow Leopard will be posted on a fanboy forum? It's hard to know where the next rumor will come from, but one thing you can be sure of: the WWDC rumor mill has only just begun.

YouTube Gives Twitter Love

Google sprinkled a few extra features on YouTube last night, in a spring cleaning effort to catch up with the ever-popular Twitter. Viewers can now post a video they like on Twitter and users got a few tweaks when managing their content.

Everybody is integrating Twitter functionality these days, as the microblogging platform gains more user traction. The most prominent example is Facebook, which redesigned its whole news feed to accommodate the need for real-time updates. And now it's YouTube's turn, but with not so much glory.

The share links on YouTube now offer a Twitter posting option along Facebook and MySpace. Users can expand the box for more sharing options, but those three xare the ones YouTube promotes.

When you click on the Twitter button, a pop-up window will open your Twitter account and fill in automatically with text asking your followers to "check this video out" followed by the video's title and URL. Unfortunately, the video link is not shortened (using services like TinityURL or Bit.ly) but YouTube said it plans to add that "down the road."

Other improvements made their way onto YouTube as well. A new Flash uploader is in service, together with a long-expected upload progress bar. The site also promises an estimated video processing time after the upload in the near future. An official HD USL parameter has been added also, for sharing HD video links.

And when YouTube says "spring cleaning," it really means it: the video-watching pages are also tidied up, with smaller action links and no more tabs for comments, statistics and data (they are now collapsible using a little arrow). It is now easier to log in with Google Account credentials (if you Google and YouTube accounts are associated) with an all-in-one sign-in page.

YouTube also makes an attempt to take on Apple's iTunesU, with the YouTube EDU project, which collects and highlights educational content uploaded by colleges and universities on the site.

Apple Now Selling iPhone 3G With No Contract

Apple stores are now selling the iPhone 3G without a contract according to a recent report by AppleInsider.

Retail stores are offering unrestricted quantities of the iPhone 3G at $599 for the 8GB and $699 for for the 16GB. This comes after someone at AT&T leaked plans to sell one no contract iPhone per customer line.

Purchasing from Apple does not require an AT&T contract and activation can be completed by the customer at home through iTunes.

This change in sales policy has likely been implemented to sell off remaining inventory before the expected launch of the new 2009 iPhone in June.

How to Get on Twitter's List

How do you get on Twitter's suggested follow list? It all comes down to a gut check, according to Twitter. In a post on Twitter's official blog, co-founder Biz Stone explained Twitter's process for selecting its list of 100 personalities and products the company thinks will help new users acclimate to the Tweeting community.

If you are a prolific Tweeter, getting on the list comes down to a simple two-step process: 1. Fill out your profile and 2. Get famous or be Oprah Winfrey.

Here's a breakdown of Twitter's method:

Step 1: Algorithms. Twitter's chief scientist came up with a program that scans the Twitt-o-sphere and makes a list of accounts that are active, interesting, and have their profile filled out (C'mon people, your profile can't go past 160 characters! I realize that's longer than a Tweet, but fill it out anyway!).

Step 2: Twitter Committee. Members of the Twitter product team then take a look at the list and review the suggested tweeters based on some basic questions. Is this tweeter a good source for newbies? Does the account have mainstream appeal? Is this a real tweeter or a phweeter (phony tweeter)? Twitter rule: if you phweet, you can't compete. Sorry Darth Vader.

Step 3: Gut Check. After all those questions have been answered, the Twitter bosses run the list past "a couple folks" and then just go with their instincts.

Twitter says it is always reevaluating the list, and that it displays twenty random suggested users during the initial signup process. However, Twitter members can see the entire 100 suggested users here.

Suggested follows include Jet Blue, CNN Breaking News, Shaquille O'Neal, blogger Heather B. Armstrong, Star Trekkers Brent Spiner and Levar Burton, Britney Spears, Lance Armstrong, Jimmy Fallon and Heidi Montag. Stone says no one pays for the privilege to be on the suggested user's list, and the list only exists to make Twitter "more relevant and valuable to users."

"We may very well change the way we populate this list or stop using it altogether," Stone said in the post. "If there is some other way to get the job done."

Despite being at one-time the most popular Tweeter in the world (CNN is tops now), Barack Obama did not make the list; while, John McCain-who was characterized as being out of touch with tech during the 2008 presidential race-earned a spot. Perhaps in an effort to reclaim his former glory, Obama today issued his first tweet in almost two months.

Stone also hinted that if Oprah Winfrey joined Twitter, she would be a shoo-in for the list. If Oprah does show up, maybe she can use her clout and put in a good word for the president.

Microsoft Attacks Apple Pricing In New Ads

Microsoft is attacking Apple pricing in new TV advertisements directed at recession weary consumers.

Mercury News reports that Microsoft's agency, Crispin Porter + Bogusky, recruited unwitting subjects by posing as a market research firm studying laptop purchasing decisions. They placed a call for volunteers on Craigslist and sent them out with a camera crew and $700 to $2,000. When they found a computer that met their needs they could keep it.

In the first video, red-haired college grad Lauren is searching for a laptop with a 17-inch screen and a "comfortable" keyboard for less than $1,000. After entering the Apple store Lauren returns empty handed. She says the only laptop in her price range has a 13-inch screen.

Back in the car, she sighs and says, "I'm just not cool enough to be a Mac person."

Lauren then heads to Best Buy where she ends up buying an HP Windows notebook for $699.

Microsoft says that none of the people they followed were told they would be in a Microsoft ad until after they selected a computer. Even the ones that had a large enough budget to purchase a Mac ended up picking a PC according to the company.

Skype for iPhone to Be Released Next Week?

Skype is almost ready to launch an iPhone app and may release it as soon as next week, according to a GigaOM report.

A tipster — a very reliable one — tells me that Skype is almost ready to launch that iPhone version, perhaps as soon as next week. CTIA Wireless, a large mobile industry trade event, kicks off in Las Vegas next Wednesday, so perhaps the announcement will be made there. I am working on getting more details, as well as screenshots of the service.

Back in January Scott Durschlag, Skype's chief operating officer, said "Skype's iPhone application is still under development. Engineers are still working on cutting the amount of power the application consumes."

Other VOIP applications have been released for the iPhone; however, an official Skype application has been highly requested.

Tesla Model S now official

After a brief period of unofficial officialness this morning, Tesla has rolled out the Model S to a sea of eager photographers. The company's also revealed specs for the EV: this seven-seater can go from 0 to 60 MPH in 5.6 seconds, boasts a top speed of 120 MPH, features a dashboard display and a 17-inch main touchscreen monitor. It's fully 3G capable, sports HD and satellite radio, uses LED and neon exterior lights, smart-key power, and push button gear selector. While that $49,900 base price will get you a battery that's good for 160 miles per charge, 230-mile and 300-mile range packs will be available. On a 220V outlet, the company says it'll charge in in four hours with a 45 minute "QuickCharge" option, and you should be able to swap batteries if necessary in under 8 minutes. Excited? Nintendo has shipped 50 million Wii consoles

Satoru Iwata's GDC keynote has revealed a somewhat unsurprising fact about the Wii. Iwata explained that global shipments for the Wii have reached "more than 50 million," propelling it to be "the fastest selling video game hardware in history." Let's look at some recent numbers, shall we?

As many of you NPD followers know, the Wii sold a whopping 753,000 units in February, and 679,000 in January, making for a total of 1,432,000 consoles sold in North America so far this year. In Japan, the console has sold 354,367 units so far in 2009 (counting the last few days of December), and Nintendo revealed 45 million Wiis had been shipped worldwide back in January. Add AMD's 50 millionth GPU, and you can see where this is going. We fully expect Nintendo's next move will be to purchase Japan and rename it Kirbyland.

Big Adsense - A Review From an Average Joe

Finding good, effective strategies for using Adsense is becoming increasingly difficult, how do you choose whats going to work? If you can get Adsense right it is one of, if not the most successfully high paying marketing methods on the net at the moment. That being said, the amount of garbage on how to make it work is also very high.

The problem is, as I mentioned, you need to do it right, and it is just so hard to find an information product that delivers the goods when it comes to the effective secrets of using adsense.

iPhone 3.0 Features on Your iPhone Today

Apple has announced many new features in iPhone OS 3.0; however, only developers currently have access to the new software. However many of these features are available via free and paid apps found either in Cydia or the App Store.

Gizmodo has posted a nice list of features and associated applications which you can see below. You likely will need to jailbreak your iPhone before continuing.

Cut and Paste: Clippy (Cydia, Free while in Beta)
Apple's ridiculously delayed cut and paste solution looks slick. Slicker than Clippy, the best unofficial C+P solution, which still gets the job done though.

GPS Turn-by-Turn: xGPS (Cydia, Free)
xGPS does use Google's Maps, and does turn-by-turn brilliantly with active GPS tracking.

Tethering: iPhoneModem/PDANet (Cydia, Free)
Tethering via these jailbreak solutions works in the meantime, but be careful with how much data you use to not raise any eyebrows at the Death Star.

Email Multiple Photos: Emailpix (App Store, $US3)
Emailpix does it fairly smoothly, though, and gives you a choice of resolution to send to save time.

Bluetooth File Transfer: iBluetooth (Cydia, Free 15-day trial)
iBluetooth lets you pair with your computer to send and receive files. It's kind of buggy, but does work

Universal Search: Search (Cydia, Free)
It doesn't search your applications or your iTunes music like the 3.0 version, but Search is great for the most valuable searching situation: email. It also searches contacts, notes, SMS and the web.

Accelerometer Controls: mCoolPhone (Cydia, Free Trial/$3)
While mCoolPhones can't touch your iTunes functionality, it lets you assign shake events to various other phone functions, like answering calls.

Notes Sync: iPhoneNotes (Mac-only desktop App, Jailbreak required. Free)
To pull off native notes sync, make sure you have OpenSSH installed on your jailbroken phone and grab iPhoneNotes, which will import all of your notes and also sync back any text file you have on your computer.

Background Apps/Push Notifications: Backgrounder (Cydia, Free)
You can use Backgrounder to force official App Store apps to keep running even when you switch away to another app. It's great for keeping IM apps open and signed in while you do other things.

Landscape Keyboard: iRealSMS (Cydia, €10) and EasyWriter (App Store, Free)
For email, try the free EasyWriter App Store app, and for SMS, there's iRealSMS, which also adds a number of other features for hardcore texters like quick-replying and advanced sorting.

MMS: SwirlyMMS (Cydia, $8) and Get MMS (App Store, $4)
The best is SwirlyMMS, but even that doesn't work very well with AT&T's MMS provider

Get MMS, on the other hand, makes receiving MMS messages via AT&T's annoying web interface a little easier. It takes a screengrab of the login and password AT&T sends, and lets you save the attached video or photo.

Voice Memos: Epiphany (App Store, $2)
We love Epiphany, which buffers its recordings and only goes back in time to grab the important parts when you tell it to.

New iPhone Information Leaked

Information has been leaked from a source inside AT&T regarding the new iPhone. The source who is "pretty high up in AT&Ts food chain" provided the following information to the BoyGeniusReport.

- New iPhone announcement around mid-June (duh)
- New iPhone will be faster and have a more seamless experience unmatched by any device (could be just talking about 3.0, but we think it’s also a new iPhone)
U-Verse iPhone application; will allow control of your home DVR (play, pause, rewind, etc.)
- The annual iPhone launch is “becoming a tradition.”
- Nothing official is being confirmed, but they said that people should prep for an exciting time this summer.
- AT&T is said to be working with Apple to create a unified product with an unparalleled experience across all their products and services.
- Apple’s 3.0 software should tell us where the iPhone platform is going… uh, k?
- They said customers shouldn’t need to choose from AT&T’s high-end devices because of features, they should choose based on preferences. The gap in capability should be filled with the new iPhone. Ok, bets on slide out QWERTY, autofocus camera, video sharing, blah blah?
- Seems like the higher speed HSDPA (7.2Mbps) is being hinted at too which should confirm the earlier rumors of the new Infineon chipset.
- The $99 3G netbook will start selling this summer, and the first one won’t be a Windows OS.

Facebook Redesign Revolt Grows to 1.7M

Just as Facebook finishes rolling out its redesigned home page users are growing increasingly furious and frustrated that the "Old Facebook" layout is likely gone for good. To date 1.7 million Facebook users have joined the social networks user created group called "Petition Against the New Facebook." The group is pleading with the social network to "make small changes and make the transition easier to deal with."

Facebook has redesigned its layout (second time in under a year), in order to better compete with upcoming popular real-time microblogging services like Twitter. But with the transition to the new interface complete, Facebook has fallen under heavy criticism this weekend for not listening to the wishes of its users, who vehemently protested against the change to the new layout.

As of this writing, things look dismal for the minority of those people fighting against the recent Facebook facelift. One option for those who want to regain the old look is to use a third-party Firefox add-on that allows you to make your Facebook page look to you (not others) like the old layout.

Facebook Speaks Up

Facebook hasn't budged. And this weekend, it issued this statement regarding the brouhaha:

"The new Facebook home page is one step in the continued evolution of the site, designed to give people more ways to share and filter all types of content, such as status updates, photos, videos, notes and more. We are grateful to have 175 million people worldwide using Facebook to connect with the people and things they care about most, and we take their feedback very seriously. We are listening carefully to what people are saying about the new home page through a variety of channels - including through a popular application, built by outside developers on our platform, that allows users to vote and express their opinion. Also helpful have been the many comments we're reading on industry blogs, the Facebook company blog, Mark Zuckerberg's public profile, Facebook user groups, and through the link on the Facebook new home page tutorial. We encourage people to send us constructive, detailed feedback and are committed to using it to inform how we build and improve the site for everyone."

The Facebook One-Percenters

The "Petition Against the New Facebook" group now peaks at 1.7 million members, or one percent of the social network's 175 million users. Approaching the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" attitude, the group has a target of two million members, claiming this is necessary for the petition to be effective.

Even Facebook's own new layout poll (pictured above), intuitively called "Vote on the new Facebook layout" shows how unpopular the recent redesign is with users. Out of over 1.2 million votes, only just over 75 thousand gave the new layout the thumbs up. But last time I checked, Facebook didn't really care.

Facebook introduced the now-obsolete layout in September 2008 and even then, when it had around 100 million users, more than 220,000 protested it. This time, indeed the numbers are higher, but the social network doesn't show any signs of intending to back off its decision to change.

And this leads me to the same conclusion I drew last year: as long as Facebook will remain free and all your friends are on it -- you'll have to stick with it, whether you like it or not. Besides, only with the new layout and features can the social network compete with the new kids on the block like Twitter.

Meanwhile, Facebook users have just a few days left to have their say on the social network's Terms of Service.

Tata's $2,000 Nano car to hit Indian streets in July

After getting official over a year ago, missing its original production plan and eventually hitting a wall with respect to production, Tata's long-awaited Nano vehicle is all set to take to the streets this July. According to a fresh report over at Reuters, the world's cheapest car (100,000 rupee, or $1,980) is expected to be the hottest thing around when it ships in India in a matter of months. In fact, there are so many orders waiting to be filled, initial owners will be "randomly selected from bookings made between April 9 and 25." We're also told that a European variant will be launched by 2011, and while a US model is still a possibility, no firm launch date has been given there.
