Bulk Change of Passwords on Solaris (Repost)

I needed to change the password of a large number of accounts on a Solaris box. Unfortunately, I didn't have anything rational like Expect. Also, the Solaris passwd command won't read from stdin. Probably a good thing. :-)

Here's a script that might come in handy. Should only be used on Solaris boxes, unless you grok the Linux shadow password format. But on Linux you can probably get Expect running and that would be a less... primitive way of getting the job done. The problem with this script is that it bypasses PAM so if you're using anything other than shadow files it won't work.

Scams and Your Personal and Financial Data

Whether you work online or offline it's time to educate yourself of the new scams that have morphed itself from the phishing scams.

For those who do not know what a phishing scam let me enlighten you. And for those who have heard about a phishing scam, let me refresh your memory. A phishing scam is the attempt by an individual to gather personal and/or financial information from you through an e-mail, phone call or letter.

Now, what are some of the ways the phishing scams been morphed into?


E-mail phishing

The individual (scammer) will send an official looking e-mail pretending to have come from Paypal, credit union, bank, or even a retail establishment with the hope of gaining personal information. (Note: for those looking for jobs you have to be careful about solicitations from scammers enticing you to try for a position -and all you have to do is provide them
with some additional information.)


Vishing

Vishing is the use of your telephone. The victim will get an e-mail or voice mail message asking them to make a phone call. The victim will make the call which will trigger a voice response system asking the user for their card number or other personal or financial information.


Smishing

Smishing is a mobile phone scam. The mobile phone user will receive a text message with the purpose of getting the user to click on a link.


Phishing-through the mail

The phishing through the snail mail- (surprising as it may seem-since it does cost money to send a letter) is where the scammer sends an individual a letter requesting that they respond to the letter by calling a specific phone number- for their own protection. My advice, if it is an institution that you do business with-contact them to verify-before you decide to give that "specific phone number" a call.


How to protect yourself

1. Do not click on the link they provide.
2. If you want to check the link. Open up a session of the Internet and put in your stored link - NOT THE LINK provided within the email. And verify the information.
3. Contact the company that you are doing business with to make them aware of what is going on - and/or to verify that the email or letter was truly sent by the company. If it was not, then this warning will allow them to notify other people that they do business with, with what is happening.
4. If you do any business online - use security software
5. Make sure the website shows SSI security- (https//)
6. Make sure your browser is up-to-date and all security patches are current.


To conclude: use caution when giving out your personal information-online or offline.

Invalidating Page Caches in Mason

We have a number of websites that use Mason, a (relatively) old Perl library reportedly used by Amazon and Salon among other sites. It has built-in and flexible support for caching at pretty much any level the developer needs, but often the easiest thing to do is to cache the output of an entire component, which looks like this:

What I wanted to do was invalidate the cache when the users browser had a Cache-Control or Pragma directive that indicated they did not want cached content (for example, when the user holds down the Shift key and clicks "Refresh" or "Reload").

The naive implementation does not work:

I mean, it does work for the initial request but all subsequence requests will continue to get the old cached content because the cache has not been invalidated, only skipped. The very next request for that component will get the old, cached content -- not a cached copy of the freshly calculated content.

Slightly less naive implementations didn't work either because of the way cache_self works. I was basically trying variations of "expires yesterday" but this parameter was not being consulted when Mason considered whether or not to return the cached content.

Cutting a long story short (well, not that long but kinda boring) here's how I got the page cache to be invalidated ("expired") when the user hits Shift-Refresh:

The variable $cache_ok defaults to "1" but is set to "0" if no-cache is found in the Cache-Control request header (for completeness, also check the Pragma directive althought that might indicate the presence of a browser so old it wears flares).

What this code does is returns the cached content (provided it's younger than 4 hours) most of the time. But if the requesting client has indicated it does not want cached content then it invalidates Mason's copy of the cached output and then falls through to the bottom of the if block where normal. non-cached processing occurs.

3. Sometimes the stats are carried forward several days. This
happens when Google decides to freeze your clicks and earnings
for fraud checking/tracking purposes or server delays. Thus, you
may notice your earnings/clicks shoot straight up when you least
expect it. It is possible for your CTR to go up by as much as
10% and your CPM to raise $200 over the normal.

7. If you run a forum site, you may notice that your earnings
are very low. Here is a solution: use a simple cookie-based php
script that only displays AdSense ads once every 10 page views.

started to trial Adlinks on my most visited pages as soon as it
was launched. I'm using the four links in a square box format,
positioned top left of my page content. After a few weeks of
running Adlinks alongside regular Adsense ads, it's clear that
the return on Adlinks is about a fifth to a quarter higher than
regular ads. There's no clear reason for this but one
explanation may lie in the fact that clicking on an Adlink takes
the user to page of 'results'. When a user clicks on one of
these, you are paid for the click. If the user finds what they
want, great, if not, it seems that they hit the Back button on
their browser and try again, just as you would for normal search
engine results.

Use the full allowance of ads available to you on each page

Google allows you to place 3 different regular ad units and 1
link ad unit on each and every page of your website and it is
important to use this allowance to maximize your chances of
clicks. Place them in area's of the page that your visitors will
be looking. For example, if your page has an article, place them
to float within the text of the article. Either at the top of
after a couple of paragraphs. Another great place to place ads
is at the bottom of an article as your visitors are looking for
a place to go once they've finished reading the article. Why not
then present them with some options in the form of some adsense
ads. The key is to blend them into the page so they don't
detract from the content. Another thing to add here is don't use
the horizontal banner ad format. Your site visitors are blind to
them and simply won't click on them. This removes one of the 4
allowed ads on your page.
Optimize each page for adsense

Research competitive keywords using a keyword research tool such
as Overture's keyword suggestion tool at
http://inventory.overture.com/d/searchinventory/suggestion/ or
grab a list of the most popular keywords from various sources
and use them in your web site pages where relevant. There is a

is a great way to find frequently searched keywords. By using
these popular keywords, you're opening the door for Google to
place higher paying ads on your website. The more popular the

Use Google's Custom Channels for each of the ad units on your
site

Google has provided web site publishers with some great tools to
help you analyze and tweak your adsense ads. Give each unit a
unique name and then analyze the results and keep tweaking them
until you get the desired results from them. If they are not
working were they are placed, move them. Try changing the colors
and integrating them differently into the text and keep detailed
notes on the changes you are making and see which one's make the
biggest change to your CTR (Click Through Rate).

Blend you Adsense ads into your web pages
This next tip is one of the simplest changes I made but had a
huge effect on my earnings. Make links the same color as your
existing text links. Don't try and make the ads stand out on the
page by using bright colors as all this achieves is making a big
warning sign that these are ads and the majority of people will
then not click on the links. By making the links the same color
as your links, it looks like they are an extension of your page.
If you use the tip above and optimize each page for specific
keywords then the ads served on the page will be related to the
information on the page and you'll see your CTR shoot up.

Learn from the best

And finally, a tip that I advise for all aspects of website
marketing, not just for adsense purposes is, learn from the
masters. There are plenty of people making thousands of dollars
in adsence earnings every month and have gone through all the
trial and error iterations that need to be done to find the most
successful way to maximize your adsense earnings. My advice,
invest in their courses. They pay for themselves in a very short
period of time.
